Hey guys as you can tell im brand new to this sight, but thought i would sign up because im in a dilemma. Basically I am looking for a new computer, checked some the pre-builts but decided i want to have a go at building :). Having been directed to this forum by a friend i thought i will give it a try...

So guys :) as they seem to say... spec me a pc £600-£700 for some gaming, some encoding, video editing, and general use.

Parts I already have lying around... Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse and I have a spare 250gb hard drive. Not planning on overclocking (don't know how to overclock but will look into later but by then i will have some cash for a fan and everything).

P.S Is it worth waiting for the release of Sandy Bridge before building at this budget?

Thanks guys in advance though :)

Sony Optiarc AD-5260S 24x DVD±RW
Coolermaster CM-690 II Lite Dominator Case

Intel/Nvidia route. i5 will get up to 4.0Ghz no problem if you decide to have a go. (recommend you buy a different cooler)
Motherboard will allow SLi if you want to stick another 460 in down the line and the PSU will happily power 2 cards.

Might ask why bother with the X6? Well its the same price as the black edition Quad and if you aren't going to OC just yet the extra cores should help out.
(few if any games use more than 4 cores at the moment but for video encoding it just edges out the X4 965 BE: Encoding Review)
The motherboard will allow you to add another graphics card should the need arise.

IMO the CM-690 II Lite is one of the best cases in it price range. Great cooling and cable management options as well as been easy on the eyes.

Can always add the Samsung F3 1tb for more storage.

The real question is, how much encoding do you do? How demanding is it?

You may find even an i5 is more than enough, and it's the ideal processor for gaming. I'd go the i5/460 route if I were you.

Don't worry about Sandy Bridge just yet, it's always worth waiting for new hardware / price drops no matter when- just buy a new PC when you need one.

Wow guys, thankyou for the quick repsonses - and sorry about not mentioning earlier but the hard drive is SATA and i DO NOT need an os :) (dont have it but gonna buy it separate to the cost of the pc)

The i5 builds look really nice :) would prefer to go intel over AMD i think.... the encoding isn't that strenuous (just a few movies that i convert for my phone) im just looking for the best 'bang for the buck' really.

I also do wonder are the i7s (900 series) worth saving up as i want htis pc to last as long as possible?

Thankyou again :), Ali
