Hi Guys,

I have decided that with th release of Vista that the time is now right for me to upgrade, i have an old P4 3.06ghz with a 6800GT which i feel is starting to get a little slow.

Anyway i have a budget of approx £1000, i could stretch say another £100 if there is a really good reason to.

I do not need a monitor as i have a belinea 20" widescreen.

I would like the pc to have the following:

Conroe Processor
Wireless Connectivity
2Gb Ram
at least 400GB HD
A new case
PSU
DVD Writer
Vista

With regards to the GFX i would like the best i can get in my budget.

I use my comp mainly for gaming, Photoshop, and then just general office apps, and surfing.

Thanks for your help in advance

Not at the moment, for now i shall only be needing a copy of Vista, Preferably Ultimate unless you guys think it aint worth it.

Thanks

I would like to do some overclocking, but i've never done it before.....

So hopefully it aint too hard.

But yes i would like to give it a try.
Thanks :)

If I had a £1100 right now, it'd be spent something like this

Of course much of that is very debatable, e.g. RAM and GFX card. Also which versions of vista (Ultimate etc and retail/OEM)
Also I'm not up on PSUs or cases at the moment but there is a rough idea for you.
What do other people think? :)

Do you think i would notice much difference between a 6300 and a 6600?? and also what does windows ultimate have over premium??

Thanks

If you want to have a system which will last you a few years go down the 6600 route, If you want to overclock then a E6300, if i had your budget i would go for a E6600 and a 680i board, 8800GTX and a 800W + PSU. Also a raptor so you can get the most out of Vista and its offerings :).

OEM 6300 + AF7 or similiar cooler on a decent motherboard will OC to the same as a E6600. The only difference is the 4mb core memory over 2mb which you won't notice in gameplay and photoshop. Certainly not worth the extra cash which can be spent on something much better deserved.

So in real terms when do you notice the difference of using 4mb cache as opposed to 2mb??

Thanks for all the replies btw.

Correct. More like £1500

I don't know about the benefits of the extra cache, looking back I would have got the better gfx card with money saved by getting a 6300. And not overclocking that chip is like buying a porsche and only driving it in 2nd gear. Plus there's plenty of help on these forums on how to.

Side note: my AC5 paste just arrived so I can re-seat my heatsink and OC properly. 2.7Ghz OC is mild and temporary

Vista ultimate is only worth it if you use remote desktop and want drive encryption see here

This is exactly what I would've come up with! good show.. Go buy it now!

Thanks for all the help guys, i'm undecided tho as to whether to spend 1100 on the machine above or fork out a little more and go for the £1500 beast and get a much faster gfx....

H'mmmmm..... i'll give it some thought over the weekend i think.

Thanks

Hehe, the inital budget has been raised! :D
Many of us have done that before. I see the belina has a res of 1680x1050 and I'd say the 8800GTX setup would be overkill right now.
Even with my setup below the 7900GTO pumps out BF2142 at 1280x1024 at 70-80 fps average every setting maxed AA AF etc.
I'm saying the extra money spent won't be that visible right now. Maybe several months down the line with future games, especially D3D 10 ones. The 680 mobo is only best for heavy overclockers. Raptor HD is not essential, I don't have one but many people here will praise it.
If u wanted to spend a tad more then go for the E6600, which will last a bit longer.

Can I get someone else's opinions?
