got the antec p182 case and the mid front intake fan is currently a scytle sflex E (SFF21E) which is a 120mm fan that runs at max 1200ish rpm, specs say 49cfm @ 20.1dba at full speed. this one pulls in air from the front of the case through an air filter.
this fan is mega old so I was wondering if fan tech has moved on and if more efficient fan is available that can pull through more air at same level of noise?

Not that much really a slight improvement but if there's nothing wrong with your fan then leave as is.

Scythe make good fans .
found a new scythe/nidec gentle typhoon in the shed, 1850rpm version, these any good as case fans? i know they were popular on heatsinks and rads back in the day. how does it compare to the fans of today?

There fine higher fan speeds moving slightly more air at the expense of a few more decibel's.

Comparing your old fan to the redux it's very close on specs at the same rpm which says it all.

To be honest unless you have major overheating issues I would think it's not worth it.
i thought the same but just thought i could maximise my cooling potential if newer and better tech fans were available. looks like phanteks has a new fan in the works may wait and see how it is. looks to be promising.

Got the gentle typhoon 1850 fitted today and it does shift a lot more air than the scythe sflex does but is noisier on full revs.
Iv also noticed that i do have space for a thicker fan so will get a phanteks T30 at some point but cant justify paying 25 quid for a fan.

T30s, NF-A12x25s, and Silent Wing 4s are all top tier, but as you say, hard to justify spending that much on individual fans unless money is no object or you absolutely need the best. A far better price to performance option is the Antec P series. You can pick up a box of 5 for less than the cost of one of those other fans and get very nearly the same performance (like literally within a few degrees). As sombody mentioned, thay can produce some annoying noise around 1000rpm. If you set your fan curve to avoid that you should be golden.

Will wait and see now, im sure other companies will respond to the T30 and maybe also make thicker fans. Was some rumours going around about noctua with 32mm thick fan but will have to wait and see.

I know there are older 38mm thick fans going around but that may be too thick to fit for me. Will see if arctic do a 30mm thick fan in future

The p12 max are fantastic at a fixed RPM but have a grind like sound when changing speed under pwm.

I run 6 fixed at 18% and there silent but move a stupid amount of air

If you can use the MM I’m giving away some fans
