Why would you want or need an alternative to a Macbook Pro? It does everything that you have asked for (minus the SSD drive - but you could just install one in the place of the DVD drive).

Dell Vostro 3350.

I have the i7 version, and removed the optical drive to get SSD and and hard disk.

Nearly identical to a Macbook Pro, but has better ports (HDMI + USB 3) and a matt screen.

Also you can get a dedicated video option, which the Macbook 13" does not have.

However I still view the Macbook Air as good value machine, and it might be a better fit then the poorer Macbook Pro, as the Air has a better screen resolution.

Any reason why you don't want refurbished? From DELL they are exactly the same as new except you don't get to choose the spec (but you do pick the spec from the range that they have available).

thanks for the replys, gives me somthing to think about,

never been a fan of dell but the lenovo looks like a good alternitive, but i like the ideas of removing the DVD for a SSD.

NOO TO MANY ALTERNITIVES BRAIN WILL EXPLODE

Not wishing to spoil the party - but why spend ~£1000 when gaming isn't a requirement?

For example, wouldn't an Acer 4830T (£450-£500) fit the bill?
