Hi Guys,

A friend is looking to upgrade his old old OLD dell rig from about 4 years ago.

His budget is around £1300 although if we could get it down closer to £1000 that would be ideal.

The main games he will be playing is League of Legends, CS:GO and maybe Battlefield.

The games are not limited to the above, he would like it to be relatively "future proof" for similar games.

The max Resolution he will be playing at will only be 1080p, (future monitor upgrades will stick to 1080p i believe.)

Peripherals are not needed in this markup.

Please could you pull apart my below recommendations?

I think the case MIGHT be a tad over kill for what he needs.

Below are my reasonings for the above choices.

PLEASE can you pull the above, and below apart to show me where my choices are not so great, and could be improved.

Storage: good reviews on the ssd. this will be used for boot and his main games he will be playing, future expansion will be another identical drive and i'll whack them both into raid 0 via the mobo built in raid management.

The 1TB drive is bog standard, good company.

CPU: Haswell chips seem to be pretty solid and if he ever wanted to OC they seem to be fine under high temps.

Cpu Cooler:
I personally have had absolutely amazing temps on sealed water cpu coolers, so that is the reason for that cooler.

PSU: I have seen some good reviews in regards to the SuperNova

Case: Personal choice, have this case at home, it is a good size for any future expansion and cable management. (might be a tad overkill)

Memory: The Mobo supports Dual channel, so i decided to go for 2x(2x4gb) kits instead of quad channel.

Card: the 970 seems to be a no brainer, amazing price, EVGA have a great reputation. he will be running this on 1080p so the chances of him running into the vram issue is relatively low especially for the games he is intending to play.

Motherboard: good reviews, i personally have not used this board before.

Thanks a lot in advance!

1080P game will just need a GTX970 or R9 290, they can even manage 1440P just fine.

Thanks for the response stullid as always,

I'll want him on I7 i think, yeah 970 will be fine for 1080 no problem, the super clocked evga version choice was just for that little more "oompf".

Looking at your second build it looks like it would be this:

(taking into account the ram + psu included in the bundle:)

To be honest i am not a fan of the write speeds on that SSD you linked me, so i think i'll stick with the Samsung as the read/write speeds are both 500+. I know for Gaming the write speeds are not needed, but he does a fair bit of music/video producing in his spare time. so if he ever wanted to transfer games/media for whatever reason from his 1TB to his SSD then it would still be at a huge write speed.

Do you personally think the price difference between the standard 970 and SC EVGA version is not worth it? EVGA also has the "upgrade" option as well for any future GPU's so this might also be a better option?

Thanks again for the response!

Looks good but the 850EVo is just as quick and doubtful you can tell the difference in use.

I would be happy with any 970 such as the Strixx, MSI, EVGA, Gigabyte and KAF2
