As the title, looking for an ultra cheap system, possibly cobbled together from eBay second hand parts for my 5 year old to build and begin tinkering / exploring the world of pc's. He is pretty good with the basics and can find his way around Windows so I am keen to steer him down the pc building path.

Any suggestions for 2nd hand platforms to go with that would have enough grunt to deal with Windows 10 and mid level gaming (strategy / sims), but cheap enough to risk with a 5 year old?

I would look at buying a second hand sandy/ivy rig and then strip it down for him to rebuild.

Complete or partial systems are usually cheaper than buying individual components - plus you you may be able to collect in your area, and have the added benfit of seeing the parts working (some people even include windows without thinking).

Or i would look to building around the Pentium G4560 for a 5 year old with perhaps an RX 460 2 or 4GB depending on your game needs.

any dual core from am2 & 775 should run windows 10 just fine, ive hard my share of experience with such platforms even a amd 939 during the free upgrade path, dont like win 10, so wasnt for my personal use and depending what you want your 5yr old playing then should be plenty, systems like that can be had from £5-50 or even free if your on facebook and any free items sale pages(how i got some when i needed parts, nice 775 ones that were just going to be dumped) or gumtree and he can learn more about upgrading/build etc otherwise buy the cheapest £300-400 system you can find that consists of new parts.

while the 460 is a good choice, depending on your budget you probably better off with a used graphics card, so with that in mind i chose the cheapest decent graphics card available(the amd 250 be better) and i chose 4gb ram as the core basics as for windows 10 more than 2gb be better or just generally speaking and i made up a £300 rough budget without seeming overkill for a 5yr old, haswell still has an upgrade path and doubt your son going to play games that will need quad type any time soon.
