i feel my system is letting me down with my 4 stix of 512 mb corsair value ram 3200/400 so would like to upgrade to some performance

i cant afford to spend oceans on them but any help is greatly appreciated, also can you buy ram second hand if so where from please?
is this advisable or not?

cheers you lot

You can buy second hand RAM, but you wonder why they're selling it... :) Not saying buying components second hand is bad... it's just when you get bad sticks, it's a pain in the backside. :( We also can't link directly to competitor retailers... :p

With your current system, get yourself a 2GB set to run in dual channel mode, if you're not overclocking get 2 decent sticks with tight timings as opposed to high frequency. G.Skill ZX are worth a look at, since they're pretty cheap, or even cheaper by about £20... check out the GeIL value sets.

I second kbc, G Skill ZX are great sticks of ram. They are ideal for non-overclockers and a great option if you one day decide you want to try overclocking. They are still a £150 or so though and I don't take that money lightly. Value ram will do a job too.

ok thanks guys, so you think i will notice a difference in performance bearing in my mind my curent ram config.

cheers

Depends what type of perfectionist you are and how much you plan to overclock, but yes you'll certainly see an improvement. Because nforce4 boards don't handle 4 sticks very well, 2 sticks of the same capacity will always win out; plus these are much faster in their own right and give you some overclocking options if you want to go down that road.

You will notice a big increase.

First, you are running Value select, which has a CAS of 3 IIRC. This will drop to CAS2 with the ZX. Second, as you are running 4 sticks, you will default to 2T and running 2 sticks of ZX say will give you 1T back again - I can see a big difference :).

ok i am about to order, is everybody sure that these are the ones for me at these specs or should i consider summit else

thanks

hi someone at ocuk reccomended these Corsair 2GB DDR XMS4000PT TwinX (2x1GB) CAS3 (MY-094-CS)

what's better do u think these or the g skill ones?

thx

Tighter timings at the same frequency are always best - in this case 2-3-2-5 is tighter than 2-3-3-6. Lower number = tighter timing. :)

However, note that the first number makes the biggest difference. i.e.

2-3-3-7 is tighter than 2.5-2-2-5 for example.

got the g-skill delivered yesterday, zx pc3200 2 x 1 gb dual package

Really really dissapointed, i think i may have a faulty stick, I couldn't run them in 1 t mode or on the normal timings, it kept on crashing my pc. So i am sending back as unwanted and will be ordering a new pair of something else as I really need to get my computer sorted as i have sold my old memory already!!

Any suggestions please, bearing in mind my specs.

thanks much appreciated

Did you slacken the timings? My corsair i have atm says it can do 2-3-3-6 but at default mhz it wont run on anything below 2.5-3-3-6

Hmm ive just ordered the hz's... fingers crossed.

I had the timings on auto, checked in cpu-z and they said 2.5-3-3-6

so no it wouldn't run below this. It could b emy board so panic thee not!

I am still open for sugegstions tho.
cheers

i guess the ram could have been dodgy?

i would have run a memtest at boot on the default settings on a quest for errors!

did u also try running with 1 stick at a time?

Hopefully i'll have my hz's up and running by sunday so i can let u know how they do if u want ;)

unfortunately i didnt have time to run memtest, I think i will go for corsair xms either the 4400 cas3 or the 3200 cas2 which do u think would be better if i plan to overclock a little?

thanks
