Yes. The opteron chips are hand selected to run cooler, with less volts and be generally more stable than other chips because they're designed for use in servers etc. Also because of the above they also tend to overclock better than most chips.

Surely you'd need the likes of a DFI board to make the most out of the mushkin XP series? Although saying that, I'm not sure what vdimm the asus xfire board can supply..

This is a funny way of going about things - why not decide what performance you need and then try and get that performance for the minimum price? That's more sensible that just buying the best system for a set price.

Because answering that question's like answering 'how long is a piece of string'.
It's next to impossible to set a price to a particular level of performance, yet it's far easier to get as much performance as possible for a set price.
