Have been looking at some monitors to buy, And I think I might go fo a 21:9 monitor.
Not amazing fussed about 144hz/120hz.
So it's really a toss up between the wide 21:9 or a 1440. (4k too early for me)

So i'd massively appreciate if people have recommendations, because there are a few out there, and deciding is pretty difficult for me.

Budget, probably around £500, lower if possible.

Thanks

1440p 21:9 or 1080p?

I would be looking at the AOC when it lands, circa £550-£600 - or give it a couple of months after release and bag it for £500.

It's 3440x1440 though, so your current GPU might dictate whether that's feasible or not. What are you running? (assuming you're a gamer).

Gpu is the hd7870
But is kind of irrelevant as I will 100% upgrade that when I get around to it.
So would get a monitor regardless and work up to that, if that makes sense.

I just assumed 1080 for 21:9 really, how much power is needed to jump to 1440 21:9?

You will need SLI or crossfire decent cards to get the best out of 1440 superwide. i.e. being able to max out most games and maintain 60fps.

I've got the dell 29 inch superwide. 2560 x 1080. I do, or did find 1080 a bit restrictive for desktop stuff, but for gaming it's brilliant, and is much less taxing on your graphics cards to boot. Overclocks to 75 Hz too. I now mainly game on my rog swift though, just because it's the best gaming monitor currently out there. Even without being superwide.

£479.99 this week only close thread ;)

How does a 34" 21:9 1080p monitor compare to a 24" 1080p monitor in terms of text size, PPI and height?

It's a bit (£160) over the OP's budget but I'd personally spend the extra for a 3440x1440 monitor like the one below :-

Much better/bigger.

To drive 3440x1440 you need to have a mega expensive GPU unless you want to lose FPS & or gfx detail ;)

If you want to spend a lot on GPU upgrades then 3440x1440 is an option but you cannot imagine how much GPU power it needs to drive games smoothly !

3440x1440=4953600 pixels
2560x1080=2764800 pixels

Massive difference!

As a very satisfied user of the 34UM65 I fully recommend it - purely for gaming and movies.

Yes the pixel density isn't the best (same as a regular 1080p 27 inch monitor if you've seen one) but for games and movies I don't have a problem at all.

Games run smoother as there are fewer pixels to drive and blu ray movies are in 1080 anyway - the 21:9 aspect movies look fantastic on it.

Also depends how close you sit to it. I also have a 1440p monitor for work and other stuff but hardly ever use it tbh - maybe says more about my lack of work ;)

I think I might go with that LG 29UM65-P.
21:9 - 1080 at 29"

1) £300 on ocuk, seem alright, and £200 under what I was prepared to pay.
2) I think it will be fine for games & movies. 1080 is ok for me for now.
3) Having a 1440 - 21:9 at 34" or even 29" costs more, and needs considerable more power. Which would cost me even more.
And I think if I spent all of that, would I justify the cost for the amount of gaming. Maybe not.

Would not bother with the 29" 21:9 display the screen is tiny its as high as a 23" 16:9 screen.

If you want a 21:9 34" is the minimum size you should consider as thats about as high as a 27" 16:9 display.

The one I linked to has the same resolution as the 29" its just way bigger. Trust me on this I returned a 29" earlier this year at my cost (£30 P&P) it was way too small ;)
34" will seem like an almighty upgrade :D
29" will seem like a sidestep :(

I considered 29 and 34.
But am unsure how much power is needed to push a 34"?
and what is the picture quality like? Particularly for windows?

7870 will be enough in many games. I use a GTX 780 Ti its just about enough in most recent games.

Remember the 29" & 34" have the exact same resolution so why not go for 34" trust me its so much bigger the 29" is just too small high wise the 34" is an impressive upgrade ;)

Windows is fine for me. Wins 7 or 8 look perfect AFAIC. Picture quality is outstanding. Razor sharp, highly detailed & vibrant colour! Its an IPS panel they all suffer from some minor backlight bleed.

Do you think the LG is a good choice?
Apart from the res & size. I don't really know about any little features

Yes I have one myself best monitor I ever bought ;)

But if you do not know about monitor features then surely you should do some more research before buying anything!

Using the 29inch UB version with adjustable stand ... Best monitor I've owned IMO ... Came from a 27 inch IPS panel .. I don't miss the height one bit!! ... The extra width is amazing for games if I want height I'll rotate the screen if I ever do . Clarity is that bit better but the aspect ratio is superb ... If you can afford the 34 inch version I'd go for it but wouldn't be unhappy with the 29 inch version at all !

Definitely agree here. I was concerned that moving from a 27 inch 1440p to a 34 inch super wide 1080 was not going to be a reasonable step but the 34UM65 is just brilliant.

Far more awe inspiring than the 29. And AWPC is also right above when he said that the resolution is the same as the 29. Same number of pixels so will make no difference at all to your graphics requirements.

Wouldn't matter if you had a 100inch screen, if the res was still 2560x1080 it would be the same.

You could get the 29, or the 34 1080p one, love it, but you will start to crave the 34 1440p. Then you'll buy that and have to upgrade to 2 high end graphics cards. Then you'll have to become a rent boy as you'll have no money. It's a slippery slope :)
