PC spec as per sig - the existing case is from an old Special Reserve PC, solid but a bit old and noisy.

Anyhow I have around £250 to spend so looking for...

A faster CPU (Intel). Quad Core preferred but will settle for dual core.
New mobo - the Gigabyte has a few BSOD issues and too old to RMA. Not too worried about o/clocking ability though a bonus if supported.
New case - preferably clear sided so I can admire the hardware.

Budget is around £250 though could probably go to £300.

PSU, memory, hard drives and optical drives being reused from the old case.

The PC is primarily used as a gaming machine so looking for an upgrade that will keep me going for about 2 years or so.

Further to the above, I am thinking about a Wolfdale Core 2 E8500 but having a job speccing a compatible mobo. The Asus P5Q Pro P45 seems to fit the bill and is mentioned in other threads but specs on both this site and others don't specifically reference Wolfdale. I presume if it says Core 2 Duo "Extreme" that's a Wolfdale?

Anything which has 45nm support will support Wolfdale. If I were you I would upgrade your graphics card first off; that will get you a further performance gain than upgrading the CPU, and will make you PC more futureproof.

i would (and actually have) oc the e6600 to 3.2 and get a 4870.

I just cant see much point in quad core just yet, dual core will do the job until the next round of price drops and then get a good quad.

Your cpu if fine @ you current clock you wont notice the difference upgrading to a 'Yorkfield' & its outside your budget anyway ofc it doesn’t stop you picking up a cheap one later as people upgrade to I7.

You may consider a better cooler to try to get a higher clock on your 6600 such as a

Zalman CNPS9700-NT
Tuniq Tower 120
Thermalright Ultra-120A
Noctua NH-U12P

As for your mobo just go for a

Asus P5Q you could even try to get a second hand one once again due to I7 at end of month :D

Case suggestions:

Antec 900

LLPC-V1000z

Hiper Osiris

Thermaltake VA90

Ofc a case is probably the only thing some else cant really suggest as it’s a taste thing.

I would personally save money where I could & get a 4870 or a pair of 4850.
