Curretly got a BFG 280GTX from 2007, however finding its starting to struggle on things I play (it's on a high spec OC i7 920), looking for replacement which gives bang for buck but not huge cost but a sufficient step up.

Games being played:

Mass effect , 1,2 soon 3

Eve online
MW3
STar trek online
Star wars online
Total war series

Like to max the above game settings for graphics out.

NVIDIA ONLY

A 580 will give approx 85% improvement the performance of a 280.

A 560 will give approx 30% improvement. - not worth it for the cost.

Potentially you could get another 280 2nd hand for around £60 which would be comparable to a 580 in the best case scenarios. you would get worse min frame rates, and you'd be restricted to lower sampling and no dx11, you'd use a fair bit of electricity too, but the cost is good if your psu /mobo can cope.

If you can then wait for the next generation to come along, I am doing just that no point in buying more outdated tech, I am running 2*gtx280 SLI atm .

I looked at 570 gtx and unconvinced it's that better.

However its a good sign if you buy a top of the range card - it lasts and worth the money

GTX 560 Ti was on sale for £160 recently. Think its 170 now but new ones may go on sale at that price on monday. IT's a fair bit better than the 280, overclocks well and is bang for the buck.

I looked at reviews And they are still saying 570 is not enough of a jump from a 280gtx, so that means a 580...

I'd like to whack everything up to full whack and have a graphics card that lasts me 3 years again. Well my 280 gtx is 2007!!!!!!!

But with 6 series more or less here I may wait until sort of march next year time, people still say , even when I rang OCUK that 280 are very good cards!

I recently upgraded from GTX280 to 560Ti. It is a significant change. Battlefield 3 pretty much doubled. I was going to SLI 280's but my PSU would need to be changed as well so I gave up on that.

Th GTX560Ti has 60% more Cuda units and at stock a 36% higher clock. This can be increased to 50% higher clock with an easily attainable OC.

560Ti is performs like a GTX295 or GTX280Sli.

A GTX570 is also nice when they are on special though imoh the GTX580 is overpriced given the performance difference.

If you got a 560Ti now and sold the GTX it would cost you around £100, a nice cheap upgrade then evaluate your options at the end of next year with new AMD and Nvidia cards on the scene.
