Hi all,

My father in law wants a new PC and has £300 to spend. What he needs is :

CPU
Motherboard
RAM -1gig will be enough
Case with PSU

Gonna re-use his old hard drives, monitor, mouse & keyboard etc.

Onboard graphics will be fine.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions !

Cheers ;)

you bumped way to fast...

is 300 the max gonna be hard..

Does he want C2D/AMD?

didn't mean to bump, tried to edit my post but screwed up somehow

wanna get home C2D..... could go up to £350 if necessary

having second thoughts re a graphics card..... do I need one ?

Yes you do. Motherboards with onboard graphics that support the faster cpus are expensive.

Whats your dad going to be using the pc for and any reason for a C2D setup?

If he`s just doing basic things, an AMD setup will be fine, it will also be cheaper.

I think he's been reading or been told that he NEEDS C2D. He's got his heart set on one now :p

Fair enough, but if he`s just doing things like surfing the internet, word typing, it would be cheaper to go for a AMD system, as you wont notice any difference from a C2D.

I'm sure you're right.... as I say he's prepared to pay £300 and I don't mind putting in some extra dosh so he gets something he'll be happy with..... if that means it's a CD2 then so be it....

Titan Tower TTC-NK32TZ Heatpipe Cooling Fan (Socket /939/940/AM2) £5.99
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ 2.00GHz (Socket AM2) - OEM £39.99
Antec NSK4400 Mini Tower Case - 380W SmartPower PSU £39.99
Crucial 1GB (2x512MB) DDR2 PC2-5300C5 Dual Channel Kit £26.99
Abit NFM2-nView nForce 6150 Micro ATX (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £54.99
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic 64-Bit Edition DVD - OEM £47.99

Sub Total £232.93
vat £ 40.80
total £293.63

I'd go for the above because the the Abit NFM2-nView nForce 6150 Micro ATX is the best main board with on board graphics avalable for any socket. It has 2 pata ide ports if u want to use your old hard drives and 4 sata ports for new drives. Also the am2 socket should have more live and upgrade ability as the next two generations for Amd chips will be backwards compatible with Am2 .This means in say two year's time you can upgrade by simply dropping in a new cpu and ram No new Windows Oem Licence .

IF it's oem it only 1 computer that computer being the 1 it came with. You have to ring up microsoft in India and try and convince them that your new motherboard, ram and cpu is not a new computer.
GOOD LUCK :D
