Spec me a £300 upgrade

The motherboard the OP has won't run the HT of an Athlon II or a Phenom II at full speed:

Also, a 125W CPU maybe pushing the limits of the motherboard. I would suggest getting a Phenom II X4 945 as this has a 95W TDP.

I would also look at getting a KFA2 GTX460 Green Edition as this only require a single PCI-E power connector:

The CX400W is actually quite a decent PSU and is actually capable of delivering 450W :

The new CX430W is actually considered an inferior PSU.

With a 95W Phenom II X4 and a GTX460 768MB Green Edition you should be able to keep your existing PSU.

Just had a look for the products you mentioned, they don't appear to be on ocuk..

OcUK don't stock the Phenom II X4 945 anymore and the GTX460 786MB Green Edition is at stock at a few other retailers.

Anyway, don't be so quick to ditch your CX400W.

IIRC,the CX400W can provide upto 360W on its 12V rail and a normal GTX460 at stock speeds needs upto 160W.

chives u may as well save for a new rig, no point throwing cash at old architecture.

I presume you mean this comment, personally I disagree with it, what he's saying though is theres newer mobos, ram and cpus that can be had, but rather than buying a new AM3 mobo and new DDR3 both of which have little effect on actual performance I would go with upgrading wht you currently have as above, its best economical option. If you just ditched your hardware evry time theres something new out youd be spending a fortune

And for other bit there seem to be mixed reports, check here, dont usually like tomshardware but its basically the same on 3 other sites I checked (googles effect of HT speed on performance), most tend to think it doesnt matter at all, some say it only effects benchmark performance not real world, whilst a few claim it does have an impact, Id tend to believe the majority who reckon it doesnt effect it v much if at all
