So i'm going to university in September and I need an upgrade on the beast, current specs are as follows;

6850 1gb powercolor
i5 2500k 3.6ghz (stock intel cooler)
16gb ddr3 corsair vengeance ram
corsair 650d
1tb western digital hdd
22x dvd rw (cheapo)
24" Benq g2420hd
microsoft sidewinder x3 mouse
logitech k300

I was thinking of an external hdd, perhaps 2tb as Im doing engineering and Im sure the files would take up a lot of space, I was also tinkering with the idea of an SSD to speed things up. anyone got any opinions?

Thanks guys :)

Get a 120gig SSD to speed up your OS and a 3TB (or 2 x 2TB in RAID) mechanical drives for storage/RAID safety for your uni work

...and if you go home to your parents a fair bit during term time...don't forget to backup your files to a decent size USB stick and leave it at your parents so you don't lose it or have it as backup.

To me your spec is still quite capable, only thing could I could suggest is to swap the i5 2500k for a i7 2600k or if your motherboard can support it put an ivy bridge i7 3770k.

why not go for a internal 2 Tb Hd and a radeon 7850?

Pointless upgrade of the CPU...imo, the i5 sandy is a cracking chip.

A new GPU would be an option if he has any cash left over AFTER BUYING a SSD tbh....
