Hi Guys,

I'm in need of a new computer which will solely be used for 3D modelling and rendering with some After effects work. I've been so out of touch with building computers and I need to purchase this today so don't have much time to do any strong research. I will be using Cinema 4D and probably Octane renderer (GPU based renderer for anyone who doesn't know).

I only need the tower, no screens or anything. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

That is nowhere near enough information. Do you currently have a workstation you use for comparison?

From what you've described the right machine for the job could be anything from a Skylake i5 + 750 Ti (about half the budget) to a 5820K + Quadro K2200 (all the budget).

This one is for work. My one at home is a 4470k, Nvidia gtx 760, 16gb ram, 250gb ssd, 2tb HDD 7200rpm.

So basically something better than that. That one is fine but I ideally I want the renders to be faster and generally handle Aftereffects and modelling better when the scenes are large. I sometimes run out of ram and the ram previews in aftereffects are not enough. Octane renderer will rely on the GPU a lot more. I'd consider getting more than one GPU for that. I'm not sure if Octane benefits more from 2 GPU's or 1 better GPU. Room for expansion would be needed just in case.

Thanks

That's helpful.

The OctaneRender FAQs says CUDA cards supported, GeForce is fine (Quadro not necessary), and it will use multiple GPUs as long as SLI is switched off. It says compute capability 5 is supported for version 1.53+ so you could get a Maxwell card or cards as long as you have that version.

I'd probably start with something like this and add a case and SSD depending on your preferences.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £1,256.05
(includes shipping: £11.10)

Awesome! Thanks for the info and I appreciate the research! I spent about 2 solid weeks clueing myself up when I made my own! I quite enjoy it but unfortunately don't have the time this.. time! I will have a word with the boss and see what he thinks!

That 64 GB memory is overpriced, you could get two 32 GB sets for £66 less.

You'll need to make the choice OP between 64 GB memory + GTX 970 or 32 GB memory + GTX 980 Ti. (Or some compromise in the middle.)

If 32 GB (or less!) is enough you can get a more powerful GPU.
