I'm building a Media PC mainly for playing HD downloads and DVD's. I'll still be watching SD (mainly discovery and Sky type stuff)

I've seen a friends 46w2000 Sony LCD which I really liked but the SD picture wasnt great. As I'll be mostly watching HD or DVD should I just make sue with the subpar SD quality or is there another screen LCD or Plasma that will be a better allrounder.

I'm looking to spend <=£1000

I don't think I can recommend a 46"+ screen for £1k or less.

Even the Sony mentioned at the beginning is £1100. I'd advice the OP to look at a smaller screen with better quality.

Generally speaking plasmas are better than LCD at this size (sweeping generalisation, I know) and they mostly come at 42" or 50". A decent 50" is going to cost £1,500 minimum.

Samsung and Sony do 46" LCDs (are they the same panel?) and my only experiance with with the Sonys, of which only the X-Series impressed me and that doesn't fall within budget either.

Media centre is to watch films anyway so go for the plasma, the small amount of browing you may have to do in Windows is no reason to go LCD IMO.
