Spec me a 4X

Looking for a 4X game to tide me over until Civ 5 comes out, has to have been released within the last 2-3 years and preferably not Sci-fi. Am considering Settlers 7 or Anno 1404 at the moment but would welcome other options if you think there is a better option.

I would list which ones I have played already but I wont be able to remember them all so would only miss some out.

Galactic Civilisations 2!

Also, for a slightly unknown choice, coming out soon is Elemental: War of Magic. Also by Stardock, its due out at the end of the month, looking to be an awesome game.

Elemental War of Magic sounds interesting , sounds a little like Age of Shadows which I really liked.

Galactic Civilisations 2 is a sci-fi though, which I am not hugely inclined towards

Both Settler 7 and Anno are not really 4x but more economic strategy games. Anyway, I always associate 4x with turn-based games, which neither of them are.

But as I can't come up with an alternative , Anno 1404 gets a big thumbs-up from me. It's no twitch game and you've got enough time to make decisions without feeling rushed.

Yeah there isnt much of an alternative around at the moment and they appear to be the closest I can get to a 4X until Civ 5 surfaces. Maybe I'll download Anno 1404 then and give that a spin til Civ5
