My mate wants me to build him a rig for general use and light gaming. He is looking for something that will be fast and also play light games like Minecraft and Portal. He wants to spend about £500 but no more than £520. I'm providing him with a PSU for £50 and my old faithful 9800GTX for £49 which is pretty good considering it still beasts the latest COD titles, Mafia II, Dirt 3 and the like. Its old tech but you'd have to pay double that to get the equivalent up to date version.

Anyway, this is roughly what I have:

i5 2400 CPU
Asus P8P67
4Gb Kingston HyperX Blu
64Gb Crucial M4 SSD
1Tb HDD
Lancool K56
Bog standard DVD drive
My 9800GTX + PSU

Thoughts? Perhaps you would even suggest a different platform altogether- any suggestions or do you think that is pretty good?

If you did away with the SSD as its a luxurary item, then you can easily get a i5 2500K and 8Gb RAM

I did think that, but I reckoned that an SSD would suit his uses better rather than processing power as it would give it faster boot times and a general snappiness. I think that CPU and 4Gb will suit him fine for day-to-day stuff and doing the odd bit of light gaming.

£500 and bits without shipping. The motherboard is a bit pricey, could go with a GD53, and get a different case, or 1TB drive.

SSD is OK as long as he is aware to check usage regularly. Mine tends to fill with crap and need a clean up once in a while.
