Hi all

Looking for a 75" screen (or bigger). theres a sony XG85 for 1499

but there's a good number of sub £1000 units, various samsungs, LG units. , Some about half the price of the sony.

What should I be looking for. Screen size is king it's the only most important factor. audio, and smarts will be provided by a PC hooked up 100% of time, for entertainment and gaming and movie viewing, and sound is handled by av amp.

Its an edge lit TV just like all those cheaper ones at half the price. It will probably be more refined than the really cheap ones but is limited by the technology.

That said its a huge step up in price to a FALD 75inch TV like the sony xg95 or samsung q85r so only you can decide if your happy with the poorer image quality and inherent issues of edge lit TVs.

how does the xg85 compare its above th xg75 and below the xg95. Is it worth double the price? Does it do 120hz at 1080 and 1440?

None of them will have 120hz panels in that range. It's really down to 2, that sony or the Samsung UE75RU7020 at 799. There's a quality difference between the 2 & you're giving up HDR either way (no local dimming, <500nits etc), but the sony does have an edge & IPS is an advantage at 75" for the viewing angles tho it does have much lower contrast but double the brightness.

Sadly at 75" there's not much choice without blowing up the price. Check rtings.com for reviews. Personally I'd choose the Samsung because I'd rather pay nearly half & give up a little PQ and keep the 700 to spend on a different TV in 3 years when that will buy you a lot more than now, all while still enjoying a pretty decent 75" in the meantime. We're on the cusp of getting some great cheap TVs in the next 2-3 years in Europe just like they do in USA today, plus all the production capacity's ramping up for bigger TVs this year. It's painful to spend even on some 65" today. 55" is the sweetspot right now and its value won't change significantly anymore (margins are already near 0%).

Excellent you are on the same thinking I am, but the LG 75" models do 120Hz and chroma 4:4:4 which is very nice I thought especially for the PC use. I don't think the samsungs do that.

You would have to be completely ignorant to buy any edge lit tv that is 55" or bigger never mind 75".

The best value for money TV for him is the 65" XF90 for £999 iirc check HUKD for more info.

If he wants 75" then he needs to pony up a considerable amount of cash. My mate just spent £3K for instance on a 75".

If he wants the absolute best then get a 65" OLED they are around £1500 now. personally that is what I would get.

If he is adamant and wants a cheap 75" then go and buy one no point asking for opinions because at his budget they are all edge lit. Which means they will look like turd.

then why is he asking about 120hz and 4:4:4, etc if he doesn't care about quality only size?

Because for a given size i wanted the best cheapest ? The samsungs at £7-800 dont do this the lg does for the same price. On that basis the lg seems better. Note im not saying excellent or good or the best. Im saying better. The lg and the samsung both get relatively bad reviews but having 120 and 4:4:4 seems a no brainer?

Anyway its all irrelevant as i managed to get my buddy a s/h 75” tv for £300 so problem is solved. Thanks all

ps i see a well known retailer is offering a 86” lg for £1999. Sub £2000 for 86 yes 86” is an excellent price.

in case for the people that didnt read the thread i know a 65” oled is better. I would buy one if it was me. It would be fantastic upgrade from my 12 year old 65” plasma. But my buddy is coming from a 100” low end pj. ANY tv will give him a better picture.

my main query was the sony xg85 is it worth the extra over the ‘dog turd’ sub £1000 76 sets. Given that even the sony doesnt do 120 or 4:4:4 i think then it seems to me the answer is no unless im mistaken hence the post but it is moot now

Second hand 75" for £300?

Does the screen need replacing?

No it works great. Yes its edge lit. Yes it’s a bargain, and yes he wanted more than i offered but he was selling and i was buying so it all worked out. Just happened to be on gumtree at the right time and right place. That’s at least £300 saved to wards the next TV.

I thought you would ask. Linsar 75 uhd 520 4k tv.

£700 new

Doesn't do HDR. Made by Vestel.

Seems like an alright deal for the size. But it's a cheap TV to begin with. The bleed will be absolutely shocking on it as will be the blooming luckily it doesn't do hdr otherwise the blooming would only be worse.

yep no fancy features at all. The back light bleed is nowhere near as bad as i expected. First thing I checked. Ive seen a lot worse on smaller sets.

I suppose for £300 you can't complain. Personally I'd have went for an OLED 65". I don't think I could live without HDR and decent blacks, etc.

In fact I reckon in a few years that's what I will get when I may inevitably re-decorate the living room or convert the garage.

55 oled have just dipped sub £1000
The 65c9 was £2500 in may now its about £1650
The 77” is still £6000
86” is now sub £2000. Only until recently 3k was the figure for a cheap86”

so im thinking/hoping a 65” oled may be on the cards at £1000 or near to come black fri 2020. But a 77” for anywhere near 2k will get me going but maybe not quite yet. Perhaps a 2nd hand 77c9 in a year.... ;) I dont think i could ever buy an lcd personally. I needs oled or microled.
