Recently had a 670 which I sent back as I was having some issues and have decided to go red for the first time.

Can anyone recommend a good 7970 in terms of make/cooler etc, dont really have a budget as such, possibly no more than £400. Just want something that is as cool and quiet as possible.

Am asking this as I’m not really familiar with AMD cards and the various vendors available.

I know I could always use Google but the info you guys always provide is always so much better :D

Cheers.

1 x VTX3D HD 7970 X-Edition 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card - AMD 3 for FREE Promotion £359.99
Total : £370.79 (includes shipping : £9.00).

What issues were you having with the 670? If it was the stuttering it appears to be fixed in the latest drivers and if I was buying I would buy a 670 over a 7970 now. Although the card I've linked above really is excellent value for money and you get a non-reference cooler as well.

Thanks for your suggestions guys.

The issue was the stuttering but I had been reading mixed reviews regarding the potential fix. I understand that some people have been using modified Windows 8 drivers but have reported mixed opinions. I guess this is always hard to read due to the difference in people’s perceptions of stuttering etc.

I have been really tempted to go again with the 670 as I absolutely loved the performance and just how quiet it was (Winforce 670) but may sit it out for just a bit longer to see what the official Windows 7 drivers are like. Either that or go for a 7970, hmm....

If I’m honest I did wonder why they would release a fix in the Windows 8 drivers first when they know they have a lot of people on Win 7 with this issue.

Most 7970's can suffer from coil whine, if you CANT Stand that noise then you have to get a Asus DirectCU2 7970 or other non refrence version

But i also have to say that the DirectCUII 7970 cant have its voltage increased, but can do 1125/6000 nicely

My ref 7970 had coil whine for a few hours, ran Heaven in a loop for 2 hours and the coil whine had gone, never to return.

Most of the users here reporting of the stutter being fixed, never had it to begin with...

Hope everyone isn't jumping the gun regarding the 'fixed' stutter issue, beta's just out and some users still reporting of having stutter@Nvidia forum.

By all means wait and see a week or two before deciding if you are thinking about getting another 670.

This is not a dig, just wouldn't like the poor guy to get another 670 only to have to send it back again.:(

VTX edition X is a great card. If you can get it at a good price, I got mine for £360it's a steal compared with the 680. Good overclocker too, got mine up to 1125/1600(72c) but I'm now PSU limited and any voltage increase crashes my system ;(

It's a fair point, have also been closely following the Nvidia forum.

One question though, how do you know if most of the users reporting the issue as being fixed never had it to start with?

Ultimately I think I will wait a bit longer but am very tempted by the VTX looks like a great card.

Rusty0611 and opethdisciple luckily never had the stutter to begin with, but both report it as fixed.

Meaning, it would take someone like yourself and others, who actually had the stutter to begin with to report it actually being fixed.

Actually 2 minutes of digging showed that it was fixed. :)

Not saying 100% but the 15 or so posts I checked.

Hmm, dunno, there seems to be a lot still having the same problem, a few on this page http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=226227&st=1560

Agree that it's fixed it for some, but I would have thought it should have fixed it for all?

That's where I've been looking rusty, there's a much higher number reporting on the problem in there.

There is already posts as dave later pointed out that it's not fixed for all, hence my post.

Well the bit that was far from convincing for me was in the notes on the nvidia site where it states something along the lines of "we've made it smoother" for the rare few that had vsync stutter issue.

It didn't say, we've fixed it completely. I guess the only way to go is to sit back for a bit and see what other find.
