OK, I was planning on waiting for Intel's new chip(s) next year, but I don't think I'll gain much. If I get a Haswell (1150) now, it will be cheaper than the Broadwell or Skylake next year, and I can upgrade to a Broadwell later (it will be 1150 too).

So I'm looking for a good I5 or I7 system which I can run overclocked a bit (my Q6600 with a 40% overclock has spoiled me there)!

So some points:-
- I'm willing to pay for good components as I want it to be reliable and last!
- I can take across the Radeon 7870XT from my current system, so no graphics card is required.
- I only need a 250GB SSD in there. I have existing SATA drives I can take across.
- Cooling should be on the quiet(er) side but permit a reasonable overclock. I suspect stay air cooled as less to go wrong compared to water cooled?
- Case = A nice mid tower is fine.
- Windows 8.1 64bit pro I guess? Unless the pro version is a waste of time?
- And this quick bootup thing I keep reading about would be nice? That requires the right motherboard?
- 12 or 16GB of (fast) memory.

Do I need to worry about the processor being a Devil's Canyon? - This I what I've seen people talking about!?

Apart from that, I don't have a clue what to buy  £800-1000 is about my price range. Main concern is for gaming. Nothing else I do on it is CPU intensive.

Help gladly accepted!

Hi,

What do you want this PC to do?

Devils canyon is the same as Haswell with a few tweaks, so go for DC and Z97.

Cant really beat Stulids advice, I5 / 8G / SSD are the requirements. And if your going for a new build mights as well get the best bang for your buck GPU as well.
Shame you have Vista really , as windows 10 isnt far out. Though the rumour is windows 8 users will get a free upgrade but nothing is confirmed.

Yes Stulids advice seems v.good!

The case even looks epic! All the case fans can be controlled by the CPU fan header via a hub! It seems to come with a front 200mm fan and a rear 140mm fan, so I suspect (with the case having a totally open top) that would be enough! Shame none of the fans are LED to show of the cases interior through the window :)

TBH, I don't really care what version of Windows I have as long as it works :) I bootup... and double click icons...

nice advice thanks!

and that huge cpu cooler won't get in the way of the memory slots or the prevent the graphics card being put in etc?

points/questions:-

1: from a couple of things i've read, they imply an i7 is a complete waste of money for gaming compared to an i5? that said, if it's only going to save me £70-80, not worth compromising really!

2: can't find any reviews for that psu - superflower golden green hx 750w "80 plus gold"?

3: can't find any reviews for that cpu coolder. how about the noctua nh-u14s? - http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/noctua/nh-u14s/6.html

4: As mentioned above, I love the idea of all the fans (CPU and case) being plugged into the fan hub in the case and all controlled by the MB's cpu fan header dynamically according to CPU temp!

The PSU you are right, I cant find any reviews but as its from Superflower (who make PSU's for many other companies I would expect it to be great (The other PSUs from superflower that do have reviews all seem to be top scores)

The Tisis use to be called the Nemesis so try googling that instead.

Also that boot option thing is a feature of the board, three options, Disabled, fast, super fast.
