Hi guys, great forum. I've been tasked with upgrading my parent's PC, but I'm unsure what mobo to get. They only really use the computer for email and internet, so solid reliability, rather than performance, is what's required here.

The criteria I have is:

  • Price: ~£50 or under
  • Memory: DDR3
  • CPU socket: AMD AM3+
  • Form factor: ATX or MicroATX
  • On board graphics: optional

Ones I've considered so far are:
Asus M5A78L-M
Gigabyte GA-78LMT-S2P
ASRock 970 Extreme3

Two of those are a bit more than I wanted to spend, especially the last one, so if you can recommend a decent mobo within budget then I'll be a happy camper.

I've settled on a CPU already, the Phenom II X4 965.

The RAM I'm considering getting is 8GB of Corsair Vengeance. It's 1600mhz, and I understand a lot of motherboards don't support this standard (could be mistaken), so please take this into consideration too.

I also require a graphics card (preferably AMD, silent, under £30). HDMI port is a must.
Example: Sapphire HD 6450

Feel free to chip in with all your recommendations, I haven't ruled anything out yet. Thanks guys.

Edit: I'm only interested in AMD, so no Intel please.

Hello and welcome to the forum :)

Do they really need a quad core cpu for email and internet, use onboard GPU.

just done a quick build below:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Pentium G620 2.60GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £49.99
1 x Gigabyte H61MA-D3V Intel H61 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £47.99
1 x GeIL Black Dragon 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (GD38GB1600C11DC) £28
1 x HIS DVI to HDMI Adapter for ATI 6000 / 5000 / 4000 / 3000 series £4.99
Total : £141.47 (includes shipping : £8.75).

Hi, glad to be here. You're quite right about the quad core, but I want to future proof it as they might be using CAD or photoshop in the near future. Besides, for the sake of £20 or £30 extra over a cheap dual core, I figure it's worth it.

That hdmi converter is interesting, I had no idea they existed. I'd still prefer it to be native, but I'll definitely consider it.

By the way, I should have mentioned that I'm an AMD fanboy, so no Intel please.:D
