Right guys,

moving out tomorrow and my new room has a bed and a matress. It's a single, and the matress is knackered. It'll do for now.

Now I'm finally gonna have the room for a double bed :D - so I'm looking at frames for £50 - £60 from ikea.

But I haven't a clue about mattresses  - there seem to be quite a few different ones, and I have no idea how much to pay either!

I'm looking at this base - http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/S59849760 - and I'll pick up the slatted bed base from there as well.

So, can anyone offer any advice? :) - Where can I find one for the above base, how much should I pay etc?

Thanks all :)

I bought one of those memory foam matresses, never looked back since, theyre lovely!

PS youre looking at over £300 and anything up to £1000 for a better quality one though

I bought mine from a local bed store and haggled him down a fair amount (it was his last one in the shop).. They apparantly last longer than a normal matress though and they are much more comfier and supportive, i.e you get what you pay for.

We have that exact same bed in the guest room in our house, the slats underneath keep falling down if you move around in bed. it's not nice hearing a bang at 4am in the morning I'll tell you! :D

Thanks dude :) I'll take a look at a memory foam mattress. I'll head to a local place :D

lol :p :D

What mattress have you put on it? :)

Anyway, I'm heading to bed. Lots to do tomorrow! thanks all!

Beware with solid foam/memory foam mattresses - they trap heat. Some companies now put ventilation holes through the mattress supposedly to counteract this, but I don't know how effective they are. Combined foam/spring options are less prone to this (go for around 3 to 4 inches of foam), but as above spring systems are more prone to failure than a solid lump of foam.

Me and the missus just got one of those 'Hamno' beds and it's getting delivered today. Suffice to say, I was jumping on all the beds in Ikea to test comfort and durability for all the dirty things we get up too! The only foam/latex mattress I liked were the most expensive options, while the Hamno seemed the most comfortable out of all the spring matresses due to its thickness and medium firmness level. :D

What I would suggest is you go visit the showroom. I think Ikea have a 30 day mattress trial, but as I live in Hong Kong i'm not sure the UK also do it. Good luck with ya purchase.

I bought a single for £100 from B&M. It's obviously a budget one, but it's 7.5 inches thick and of average density memory foam. It's gloriously comfortable, though I'm not confident about how long it will last.

The degree to which memory foam traps heat depends on the density of the foam, so that's a figure to look out for. Unfortunately, it's a bit of a trade-off between comfort and heat retention. Mine is, if I recall correctly, 50Kg/m^3 and I don't find heat retention to be a problem.

I just got a bargain from one of town shops ,a silent night double divan with a silent night orthopeadic (sp) matress and extra comfy top cushion built in for 260 instead of 650 in there may sale ends 5th i think.

Really good quality matress and bed at a bargain price :D

I have a Dreams memory foam mattress, it's up there with the gods when it comes to getting a good nights sleep.

I like the pocket sprung ones with 1000 springs at least - very comfortable, but quite expensive. You can get Divans which start from around 250-300, but can escalate up to over 1k. A bed / mattress for under £100 will knacker your back.

Thanks for all the info guys! :)

I think I'll just use the bed that is there for now, if anywhere was open tomorrow I'd go and look then but I'm busy next weekend so the week after will have to do! I'm sure I can put up with it for 2 weeks. I'll then have time to go to ikea and get the base and then shop around for a mattress :D

Part memory foam, part sprung are the best. Amazing comfort.

Gotta agree with all of these. My mattress - from Dreams - is a 2000(ish) pocket spring and memory foam combo. Cost me around £900 but it's the best mattress I've ever had, by a big margin. I got a £300 base (also from Dreams) for it, and though it was fun to put together on my own, I got there in the end and certainly don't regret the money or the effort.

Don't get a bed frame from Ikea, the frames are non-standard single/double/etc. sizes and therefore unless you get a mattress from Ikea (which are rubbish), the mattress will never fit properly.

I got my wooden bed base for Dreams which cost £120 for a King size. That was in their never ending sale. Then I got a Sealy Posturepedic which is quite firm for about £300 from an online store that I can't remember, that was about £150 than any of the retail shops we could find it in.

You can go crazy with the amount you spend on beds, but I think as long as you spend a reasonable-ish amount on the mattress from a well know brand you will be fine. Just don't go to Ikea for one!

Divans are quite good as it's a base and mattress - the base can even have drawers which is handy - and since they are combined can come out cheaper.
