Hybrids are the masters of nothing essentially, I think I'd only ever consider a Hybrid is for family riding at the local park on smooth pathways, beyond that other bikes are better suited.
What are the tracks like & you should get reasonably far with £1000.
In my opinion, the definition of a "hybrid bike" is nothing like it used to be, for me it is a bike designed for riding in a wide range of conditions bar extremes and consequently not built for pure speed.
For example, I would classify "do it all adventure" drop handlebar bikes and fatbikes as hybrids.
I bought a Voodoo Wazoo fatbike back in February, because I wanted something that could give me confidence on the local potholed roads and enable me to cycle off-road too, as my weak lower bike struggles with drop handlebars these days (got worse after my cycling RTA ~30 months ago).
Under £1k, there are currently a few decent fatbike choices out there, including...
Voodoo Wazoo ~£500
Calibre Dune ~£580
On One Fatty ~£700
Charge Cooker Maxi 1 ~£735
On One Fatty with carbon fork ~£800
Charge Cooker maxi 2 ~£935
On One fatty Trail with Bluto fork ~£1000
There's also rigid forked mountain bikes out there, such as...
Voodoo Marassa ~£350
Pinnacle Ramin One ~£400/£500 (2015/6 versions)
Kona Humuhumu ~£535
