Right, I can't see a dedicated thread so excuse me making a new one but can someone essentially spec me a starter kit? Bike, clothes, gear, etc. Not sure on a reasonable budget for a beginner, but I simply want to move away from running and start cycling.

Around my area there are a lot of cycle paths but then there are also many tracks. Are cyclo-cross bikes better than hybrids? (I used to have a hybrid, wasn't too good).

What's your budget?

Reasonable to one person isn't the same as it is to another....

And I've never ridden a cyclo-cross bike or hybrid as always had a mountain bike and road bike but at a glance I'd much prefer a cyclo-cross bike over a hybrid. Cyclo-cross bikes are likely to be lighter, much better on the road than a hybrid and if it's mainly well maintained cycle paths then it will be better on that too.

Hybrids are the masters of nothing essentially, I think I'd only ever consider a Hybrid is for family riding at the local park on smooth pathways, beyond that other bikes are better suited.

What are the tracks like & you should get reasonably far with £1000.

Mainly tarmac paths and disused railway paths, most of which are in good order. Some of the tracks are composed of just compacted earth though so it would be nice if I could negotiate them but not a priority. There are plenty of country lanes to fly down and the main roads into town all have dedicated cycle lanes.

Probably get away with a normal road bike with chunkier tyres for that. If not adventure/cross bike would suit it. So many on the market now, if you want everything for 1k including gear I wouldn't really knoww hat to recommend I'm afraid. If just for the bike different matter.

Noted on the budget. I've been scouring Gumtree, any pointers?

Frame size will be an important factor when buying used - whilst I'm sure there are size charts that say Height/Inside leg = XX frame size, it might be worth a trip to a larger bike shop and being properly measured and/or physically trying a couple of different size bikes.

You can always change the tyres on a road bike to some "hybrid" style semi-slicks, depending on how much "light offroad" you would want to do.

e.g. something like:

Thank you for the great replies. I'm 6'3 and my inside leg is 34". I suspected that going off the size guides alone would be foolish so as per your advice, I'll exercise restraint on just ordering a bike and will get myself down to a shop to try a few out first.

In my opinion, the definition of a "hybrid bike" is nothing like it used to be, for me it is a bike designed for riding in a wide range of conditions bar extremes and consequently not built for pure speed.

For example, I would classify "do it all adventure" drop handlebar bikes and fatbikes as hybrids.

I bought a Voodoo Wazoo fatbike back in February, because I wanted something that could give me confidence on the local potholed roads and enable me to cycle off-road too, as my weak lower bike struggles with drop handlebars these days (got worse after my cycling RTA ~30 months ago).

Under £1k, there are currently a few decent fatbike choices out there, including...
Voodoo Wazoo ~£500
Calibre Dune ~£580
On One Fatty ~£700
Charge Cooker Maxi 1 ~£735
On One Fatty with carbon fork ~£800
Charge Cooker maxi 2 ~£935
On One fatty Trail with Bluto fork ~£1000

There's also rigid forked mountain bikes out there, such as...
Voodoo Marassa ~£350
Pinnacle Ramin One ~£400/£500 (2015/6 versions)
Kona Humuhumu ~£535

Whatever you choose, don't forget to check Quidco and Topcashback for offers, plus British Cycling membership will give you 10% discounts at Halfords; Chain Reaction, Evans.;)

Ah, good advice thank you! I'll look up those bikes and see if they fit the bill.

I'm going to need some prescription cycling Sunglasses. Google throws up many options! Anybody with any experience?

E: I don't think a fat bike is what I'm looking for :)

I've just come from the bike shop. The guy in there was pushing me towards the ridley aluminium frames. With 105 and hydraulic brakes it was £1350 though.

I was tempted, but it's a lot of money to drop on a first bike!
