Looking to buy one shed some weight get some fitness back.

However I only have a budget of £200, with a view of getting a better or more expensive in a year or so time.

I understand Halfords should be avoided or will they be ok for what I want ? I don't really know where else to look or what to get. Will be mainly on roads and easy trails I guess.

Any ideas guys ?

Been looking around are the Carrera range from Halfords ok ? Or something like these below ?

Or any of the following from Decathalon ?

Will have a look around for 2nd hand ones later when I get back from work.

Mountain bike with set of semi-slicks sounds ideal - I spent many years riding that set-up to keep fit.

What area are you from, I know of something that would maybe fit the bill, I'm in Warrington area, Cheshire.

I had the Crossfire 2, it lasted me 6 months of doing around 5 miles a day. I really would run far away from Halfords

The chain and bottom bracket needed replacing after 2 months, they refused to replace it under warranty. Finally after 6 months, Halford's told me it required a new free wheel. At this point, the bike had already set me back around £500 (including selling price + repairs).

I've switched to a Planet X road bike now, and have done over 1,000 miles without a single problem.

As others have said, I would go second hand at that price point.

Giant is a good make, and if that's the bike you're going for, does it fit you? There's only Extra Large available, usually reserved for over 6 footers.

I've got a boardman mx race hybrid you can have for £150 if you are 6ft + and can collect from Newcastle :P
sram x5 gears
bb3 brakes

They are all much of a muchness at that price range, choose whatever you can get locally so at least you get something that's the right size - just make sure to take touch's advice on avoiding rear "suspension".
