Neither link works mate. Also, this same question has been asked about 5 times recently, with more or less the same budget.

Have a look through previous threads and see what has already been suggested.

Yeah they're working now. Both good bikes, but if your budget is £400 then try and get closer to it if you can, unless you're factoring accessories into that too?

As I said, check the other threads knocking about for some more ideas.

well another tread recommends the GT Avalance 3.0 disc, the one I've linked to is the 2006 I'm probs going to be looking at the 2007 model tho, I have never had a GT bike are they built well? What are the stock forks like on that? I would like some Marzocchi forks if they are naff. dunno which ones tho, they would have to be compatable with disc brakes tho ??

thanks

GT have been making bikes longer than most and are good at what they do, even at the lower end of the range.

Suntour are far from the best forks, but certainly not naff. Depends what type of riding you're doing to be honest. If you're going to get serious you'll want to upgrade at some point yeah, but you'll find that out as you go along.

For the most part discs and forks have a universal standard mount, but obviously check before you upgrade, as and when you do.

Have a look through Evans, they've got some good bikes around the £400 mark.

Shops around the country too so you can try before you buy, which is very important when buying a new bike.

what size frame/wheel should I be riding, I'm 5foot 7/8 inches tall, with a 29.5 leg according to my jeans :P dunno what that is measured in, supposing inches?

thanks

Probably around an 18" I'd have thought, but frame sizes are just the length of the seat tube, you really need to sit on a bike to see if it fits as some are longer in the top tube than others, and things like head angle and stem length can change the feel and riding position of a bike by quite a lot.

Whilst the thread is here, what do people think of the Specialized P Series P2 Cro-Mo 2007?

I'd be swapping the cable-actuated brakes for my hope PRO's but apart from that is it a bike worth persuing?

Not mountain bike fan myself. But I would stay away from Halfords wether its a MB or race. Go to a local bike shop talk to them about what you want etc and they will measure you up properly, not some 17 year old half-wit thats never even ridden a bike.

Remember you get what you pay for. Buy cheap it wont last.

I worked as a specialist in Halfords for a year and I know plenty of others in stores around the Midlands at least who ride and are passionate about it. Perhaps you've had a bad experience in one store but don't be too quick to generalise.

Halfords are to biking what pc world are to computing. Theres not many here who would buy a system from pc world.

Fair enough, not much point trying to persuade you otherwise, I think you're being pretty short sighted about it though.

To the OP, a bike is a bike no matter where you buy it from, don't be wary of Halfords if they've got a good deal on, just make sure you take the bike for a spin before you hand over any cash as you might not get on with it.

I've been to halfords now and again, and as above, it's the purple shirt group of bikes. :p (Doesn't Jonny ///M work there?).

Personally I'll check something out at a LBS or a local club, and then go and order it from the factory.
