Spec me a bottle of red and a bottle of white wine

I've never been a big wine drinker, but always wanted to. I think my main problem is I'm picking the wrong wines. I'm looking to buy a couple bottles from Tesco tonight.

If you could recommend 1 bottle of red and 1 bottle of white, what would they be? Under £10 each.

Very broad request and one that is nigh on impossible to respond to, unless you know what you have tried in the past that you like, but I have a couple of suggestions:

To be honest Papa I've not drank many at all.

Tried a Rioja last week, can't remember the name, was ok, a bit too strong of an aftertaste though.

Had some Milford point (I think) Sauvignon blanc last week. That was very enjoyable.

Sorry I've not go more to go off, lol. A bit of a wine noob!

Will give your recommendations a try though!

For a Red I'd recommend Yellow Tail Shiraz or Wolfblass Shiraz, but then I prefer Shiraz over most for my red

Is the wine to drink on it's own or with food? (Wine normally comes into it's own when matched with the right food, although some are good on their own as well).

Over Budget @ 12.50, but this is a really nice shiraz, IWC Gold medalist.
