Hello All,

My son is after a PC to play Fortnite, Rocket League, Titan Fall 2 etc. I'm looking for a budget spec for both a 1080P and a 1440 variant. Not looking for a price of a monitor yet, just want to get a feel for the PC price. I've been our of the loop for a few years.

Cheers,

Jed

Do you have any stuff you can re-use? Like case, PSU, SSD?

This is 'officially' a 1080p spec, but it will do 1440p in esports.

Phanteks AMP 650W 80 Plus Gold Modular Power Supply - £74.99
Lian Li Lancool 205 Midi-Tower Case - Black Window - £64.99

Intel Core i3-12100F 3.30GHz (Alder Lake) Socket LGA1700 Processor - Retail - £119.99
Asus Prime H610M-A D4 - Intel H610 DDR4 Micro ATX Motherboard - £110.99
Team Group Vulcan Z T-Force 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-25600C16 3200MHz Dual Channel Kit - Grey - £55.99
Asrock Radeon RX 6600 Dual 8GB GDDR6 PCI-Express Graphics Card - £248.98

WD Blue SN570 1TB SSD NVME M.2 2280 PCIe Gen3 Solid State Drive (WDS100T3B0C) - £74.99

Grand Total: £764.12

This is what I would consider the lowest tier for new hardware that is worth buying, it is normally in my basket ready to link 2 to 3 times a day. You can go AM4 or 10/11th gen but it seems the Intel 12th gen works out real good value for the performance you get.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £864.14 (includes delivery: £12.30)

This would be an excellent PC and more than capable of playing Esports titles @1080/1440p and great for general computing tasks as well. Can drop down to 2x8gb of ram but DDR4 is so cheap it seems a waste not to get 32gb kit.

My main issue is not knowing what current cpu and gpu is up to the job.

Those kind of games are usually very well optimised and will run on a potato, but obviously expectations will vary. The problem with buying lower-end CPUs, or graphics cards than what I or Haz123 have suggested is that they're kind of borderline for getting decent FPS in current games and may have limited upgrade options, so it makes sense to buy into an upgradeable platform with a CPU/GPU that have some legs in them. For GPUs, you can get away with e.g. a rx 6500 / 1650 (if new), or even a used 1050 Ti and for CPUs, something like a 10105F (new) or i7-4770 (used) would be fine, it's just getting past the point that their level of performance still makes sense buying into.
