Interim upgrade, suggestions wanted

So I upgraded my GPU to a 7970 and now I've got the upgrade itch for a new system.

I don't need a Monitor or PSU as I have an XFX ProSeries 850W PSU, a new SSD isn't essential but if theres room an upgrade from my 64 gb one would be nice.

Budget wise I've got a max of £500 including shipping and a case.

Use wise I want something to play games on max at greater than 1080P, going to be getting a larger res monitor or going for eye-finitiy. Size wise I'd like something with the room for a second GPU eventually but thats not essential.

I'd also like it to be quite quiet atm, my current system is relatively noisy when idle as my CPU heatsink can be quite loud. So a nice quiet heatsink would be nice.

Cheers

Cheers man :)

Very tempted to just drop the money on this now lol.

Any reason I couldn't swap the case out for one of the OCUK pre-noise dampened ones?

Not sure, There may be less clearence between the top of the cooler and the side of the case but with it being a windowed case in not sure that applies.

I would Webnote/Call OCUK to check. :)

So, what is your current system?

Currently

i7 930 with a True and a Xigmatek fan ( need to get a new one if I don't upgrade).
Gigabyte X58-USB-3
Corsair XMS3 6 Gb - Could I possibly re-use this?
Gigabyte 7970 Ghz edition
M4 64 Gb ssd
Spinpoint F3 1tb

I would wait till the Intel Haswell chips are released in June ;) Meanwhile you can sell your SSD & RAM then go for a larger SSD and 8GB of RAM. It could be re-used but ideally you want dual-channel RAM as it will be faster and only take up 2 slots

Can't imagine I'd get very much for the SSD. I may just put it in my macbook, remove the macbooks DVD drive and have both in there

Just get a decent cooler or fan, if the fan is noisy, bigger ssd. Your mobo is xfire capable, so a second 7970 is also an option. And if you hav`nt already, OC that 930.
What case do have, another upgrade option.

I've currently got a Xigmatek Midgard its a decent case but I do fancy a change

Good budget case but not great for cooling/cable management.

If you fancy waiting til haswell you can upgrade your case and SSD now and then take the plunge when haswell comes.

Getting a new Cooler would be a good idea though it wont come with a bracket you'd need for Haswell. A few companies (noctua) may supply this free when Haswell lands but im not sure, may be worth holding fire on that. :)

Yeah I picked the xigmatek up a few years back when building my current rig since my local store was selling it on cheap, cable managment on it isn't the best at all but its doing the job at the moment.

Thats very tempting, student loan is in this month ( i think) may have to get a new case, ssd and cooler then

Good selection here, @the op. As the others have suggested, keep your current board, cpu and ram. Oc'd to 4ghz, the 920 is still a great cpu. I switched one out for the spec in sig. A side grade at best, in some games it's actually been a slight downgrade.

Cheers for all the advice everyone. What about spending about more and getting a 3770k instead of the i5? Would that be a more worthwhile upgrade?

If not I may just get a better case along with the recommended cooler or even a aio water one

Jumping from the 3570k to the 3770k is only an upgrade if you use video editing software heavily, otherwise you won't even notice. It make no difference in games.

I thought you were waiting til haswell, no?

I've not made my mind up at the moment, just wanted to see what my options are now.

Most likely going to wait for Haswel, I imagine we'll be hearing more soon about Haswel over the next few weeks/months?

Ok so here's my interim upgrade order.

Probably just going to OC my 930 for a while and see what Haswell is like and pick that up / get the next gen.

So Going with my 930 @ 4Ghz, Ga-X58-USB3 mobo, xfx 850w I'm going to pick up the following:

Your Basket
Samsung 250GB SSD 840 ... 1
Corsair Obsidian 550d 1
Noctua NF-F12 PWM 1 - This is to replace the one on my TRUE
Subtotal £275.96

Any other suggestions / replacements? In particular any good quiet case alternatives to the 550d I'm also considering picking up a second spinpoint f3 and doing some raid lovelyness from MM
