I'm building a computer for christmas and could do with some help :). There is a budget of £650 (absolute max £700). I would like to play games on it reasonably at high spec, I will be watching a fair amount films with HD included and I will use it for music too.

I was thinking...

... This processor http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-244-AM (AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition "125W Edition" 3.20GHz). Is this suitable?

Don't know about the motherboard, basically want a decent one for future overclocking but not too ridiculous and I want it for a full sized case.

I was looking at this RAM but not sure if it's ok http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-088-GL

I want a fast(ish) 1TB hard drive.

I'm waiting to see what happens next week before I buy a graphics card but I was thinking about £200 max for one.

Need a good power supply would prefer modular if possible within the budget.

And the cheapest SATA DVD drive.

Also I need a good budget case. I've read good things about the Antec 300 what do people think about this one?

Thanks,
Dom

Cheers for the help guys!

I think I will wait until after AMD release their new graphics card next week before I buy one.

Is that power supply gooing to be good enough for a system that will eventually have multiple HDD, more RAM and a more powerful CPU. I do really want a 1TB hard drive as I will have a lot of music and films to handle.

Oh and I don't need a Blu-ray drive right now because I have a PS3.

On the subject of AMD vs. Intel I have no real preference, I jut want a CPU that is good now and a motherboard that has the highest potential for upgradability and overclocking. So I don't mind taking a hit on stock CPU performance as long as I can overclock now and upgrade in the future.

Sorry if that didn't make sense :). Basically my minimum requirements are:

1TB HDD
Good PSU capable of handle a fairly demanding system, modular if possible
Good CPU
Motherboard good for upgradability and overclocking
Basic keyboard and a mouse (I think I'm going to get the Logitech MX518)

Thanks again guys :)

The system above really is about as much as you will need for those requirements. The gtx 470 will be plenty, the gtx580 will be awesome. That psu will be fine for your requirements. The i5-760 will be perfectly capable for a long time. If you want to overclock I would grab yourself a decent cooler. Such as an artic freezer or gelid tranquilo.

Good choice on mouse, I am waiting a delivery of one too :)

deffo go for the intel build, yeh they are abit more pricey but i find intel cpu's to be much more powerful and a lot better performance, and if you are going to be gaming then again intel cpu's. :)

that's just my opinion, there are lots of people who prefer AMD over intel but as you have noticed im a intel fanboy !! :D

beasty

An X6 1055T could be had for about £20 less than an i5 760 (motherboard included) and the extra cores on the 1055T means it outperforms the i5 760 in multi-threaded applications (video encoding, photoshop).

However, the i5 760 is faster per thread and so would be more suitable for gaming, plus it probably overclocks better.
