Right, this one is for my work place.

Basically all 3 tills, the stocks software etc is run from an old am2 athlon dual core with 2gb ram machine that is slow and keeps screwing up. The owner of my pub has asked me to build a new system for him that will nuke the current one into existence.

When someone is using the current machine i.e. just using it, all the tills are laggy and very slow to respond and they crash on a daily basis.

I would like a quad if possible but my budget is £300 for the tower alone.

I only need the tower... thats it

Please help!

Thanks

For business PCs it's very hard not to recommend off the shelf machines with a proper warranty.

Does the £300 include Vat, and will an operating system be required? Are there any special requirements due to interfacing with the tills?

Offers change later today. So the spec isn't "valid" for long.

Don't dismiss the G840, it's quite a pokey CPU for the price. I've used it for office machines plenty of times. I built one for my local garage, they keep multiple programs open at once and the system doesn't struggle, I only used 4GB of RAM in that.

any chance of an itx build?

mini- itx could get pricey bud. No offense but I'd rather wait to spec till after the offers change, unless you intend to buy right now. Thought i could atleast give you a rough idea of what I would build.

It's rare for H61 mobos to have Sata3 and USB3. The H61 i used in my first spec is a rare exception to the rule. Hence why I have used a H77 on the mini itx platform

Core i5 Ivy Bridge with 8 gb of RAM, mini-itx format... needs a PSU though. That Cooler Master Elite 120 looks like it takes a standard PSU, and you'll only need a 400w so another £30-£40 on top will get you what you were after.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-3450 3.10GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £143.99
1 x Toshiba (7K1000.D) 500GB SATA 6GB/s 32MB Cache - OEM (DT01ACA050) £49.99
1 x Gigabyte H61N-D2V Intel H61 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Mini ITX Motherboard £44.99
1 x Cooler Master Elite 120 Advanced Mini-ITX Case - Black £35.99
1 x OcUK Value 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Low-Voltage Dual Channel Kit £24.95
Total : £311.90 (includes shipping : £10.00).

Edit: You could even possibly salvage the PSU out of the old box. Presumably you'll be doing so with the optical drive (if you need one) if it's SATA based?

This is the best yet. What size of a hard drive is needed? If you only needed a small one then I would recommend this 120GB SSD, http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-048-OC
It will make your computer a lot quicker and it is only £43.99.

Good call xpygmy, that drive speed and size at that price is currently simply unbeatable and would make it a stonking box - but as it's a till machine I'd have thought it'd need a bit more room for backups and such?

Then again, as it's all running off one drive maybe backups aren't his primary worry. Ideal solution would be a couple of drives in Raid-1, be a speed boost and redundancy :)
