Google should be your first stop, followed by a trip to a shop to try out their handling. Essentially, Anything by Canon or Panasonic should be top of the list for quality...
If you look around you may be able to pick up a Panasonic TM700 for the higher end of your budget. Excellent all round camcorder with 1920 50p recording and phenominal low light capabilities. Has probably the best image quality of all camcorders at the moment. It has built in 32gb of memory and expandable with SDHC/SDXC cards. Price should be reducing soon with the new TM900 coming out (without a great deal of improvements to be honest.) so maybe best hold on a few weeks?
As an owner of a Canon HF S10 and comparing the footage to the Panasonic, I'm seriously thinking of swapping over.
