Im off on holiday to Kenya in the new year and need something to hold my gear and keep it safe.

My kit includes:

Canon 400d
Battery Grip
Sigma 17-70 f2.8 with hood
Canon 70-300 IS USM with hood
Possibly a Canon 430 Flashgun
extra Batteries/memory cards/rocket blower and pen
Filters

I'm looking for a backpack/rucksack job that may have a little room for another lens or two if needed in the future. Preferably one with a extra compartment for a windproof jacket/jumper, snack and water.

I do a lot of walking about so something comfy will be a bonus.

to hold my gear and keep it safe.

Let me concentrate on "Keep it safe" and recommend one of these:

- Match Maker M
- Pyjama Pride L
- Zoomiverse XL

They are different sizes of the same general design. I like them because the main opening is against your back. You've got to take it off to get into it, which gives you some peace of mind when you're carrying six grands worth of kit on public transport that is packed tight with light fingered tykes...

It is well padded and comfortable to wear when loaded.

I am very interested in the outcome of this thread as i also need a bag of similar spec that i can use sking next year and for day to day.

I did 3 months of travelling in some very varied places. Glaciers, Jungle and forests etc.

I personally use the Lowepro Rover AW2, its perhaps not as sturdy as you may need if you want to keep things protected. But there is plenty of cushioning and a good waterproof cover. Also a tripod holder etc. Can't knock it, and a spare top section for a jacket or jumper and a few odds and ends..

There are some sligtly large alternatives in the lowepro range and some with specific water proofing etc. Take a look at their site.

Lasted my trip and is still in great condition. Depends on what sort of conditions you will be using it for. buzzby i suggest maybe the dryzone type product of the same bag.

for now im only going to be useing it for the Kenya trip which should be dry but could be dusty. other wise its a day to day bag for going round the peak district. A tripod mount will be a bonus! The crumpler bag range does look interesting but feel it may be a little big as i doubt i am going to have as much kit as shown on their website.

Hmmm... I see what you mean. They seem to be able to fit more into the Matchmaker than I can fit into my Zoomiverse.

Of course, we know as much as anyone how easy it is to tell lies with a photograph... there is no substitute for turning up at a shop with a bunch of kit to try out. Note that crumpler have worked out that we take digital photos, so all of the bags above have pouches for your laptop. Make sure you pick one the right size.

I took a Crumpler Pretty Boy half sack to Zambia for three weeks and on a daily basis it carried:

Eos 350D
Eos 5
Canon 70-300IS
Canon 17-85IS
Canon 24-85
Speedlight 430EX
Battery Grip
Film
Cards
Filters
Binoculars
+ general use as a day sack.

I found it ideal although it was a little ticght with 2 bodies in there.

Looking at the suggestions so far none seem to have any solid inserts. I may be missing something but if your traveling about wouldn't you want the camera storage section to have a solid frame around to help protect the camera from being banged about?

generally if its on your back i cant see it getting knocked about too much! you would need the whole casing to be rigid for it to provide effective protection which then gets heavy. Beside it will rattle quite a bit wouldn't it!?

You some thing along the lines of this

As mentioned above, with the rover, I had a camelbak 1.5ltr water res in it for 90% of the time and also a large waterproof jacket, gloves. Bit tight but certainly went in ok
