i am a dental techologist ad take fotos of peoples teeth [i know wierd]
what would be a good camera in the £400 approx price range bearing in mind my son says im a noob !

sounds to me like you just want a DSLR body with a macro lens and ring flash

If thats all your doing then I advise an entry level Dslr with something like a Canon 100mm Macro F2.8 or Sigma 105mm F2.8 (depending on brand of system you enter into.

Plus a ring flash.

For £400? I don't think so. A decent compact with a macro facility will do the job nicely.

is the sony cyber shot H5 a good bet?

If you're going down the compact route I'd say go for a A700 with 1cm macro focus range. Great for macro shots and can be had for £180. It should be perfectly acceptable for you.
