right guys i'm thinking of getting an slr camera (i don't know what this is i just know that its good) i don't want to spend any more than 300 and it doesn't need to be top notch, preferably fast shutter speed so that i can take photo's of moving objects without blur, good detail close up (for stop motion videos) and i think thats the only specification i need.
although i'm still finding it hard to justify 300 pound on a camera but maybe you guys can help me with that
thanks

ooh, its you! ahah, did you get that laser pen in the end? blind anyone?

^_^

SLR means single lens reflex, it means you can change the lens to obtain the best photo for the situation be it a one with a very high telescopic view for long range or a macro lens for close ups

however, if you dont know what SLR means, then you pretty much dont need it, go get a point a shoot

The single-lens reflex (SLR) camera uses an automatic moving mirror system which permits the photographer to see exactly what will be captured by the film or digital imaging system, as opposed to non-SLR cameras where the view through the viewfinder could be significantly different from what was captured on film.

£300 won't get you much in the world of SLRs, you'd get yourself a second hand entry camera and lens, but then you would need to spend more on accessories, and you'd probably want another lens looking at what you want to take pictures of, on top of that you'll need a good bag to keep it in, you'll find that it will soon mount up.

what about these two about 300 pound

SAMSUNG GX-1S + 18-55mm Lens

OLYMPUS E-410 + 14-42mm Lens

Sounds like you want a point-and-shoot if you don't even know what an SLR is :p

Also, the camera itself doesn't determine what shutter speed you can use (other than what its maximum is); that depends on the lens's maximum aperture and the lighting conditions.

A good fast lens that has some zoom capability (which presumably you want) will probably be out of your price range.

oh ok, well would it be ok for you guys to post links to some good dslr camera's then ? or is that an ocuk competitor

Well if you really want an SLR then a Nikon D40 or Canon 350D (+ kit lens) is probably your best bet, as NinjaBill said.

You should probably ask yourself if you need one before you buy though: are you actually interested in photography to the extent you'd want an SLR?

no im not i just feel that when i want/need to take pictures my rubbish 20 quid digital one and phone cameras just don't cut it

Your average SLR, while being capable of much better pictures, is, on the whole, a ot more difficult to use, and will have quite a few settings that you need to get right, to get a good picture.

If you're after an upgrade to a £20 point and shoot, then the nikon 5100, and the canon g9 are probably your best bet.

It's a lot easier to get a badly exposed out of focus picture with and SLR than it is with a high end compact camera :) However, if you would like a higer degree of control over what your camera is doing, and an ability to quickly empty your bank account buying accessories you dont really need, than an SLR is the way forward.

Most higher end compacts, and, I think, even most low end ones, have a tripod mount. Youll need a sturdier tripod (therefore more expensive) for an SLR than you would a compact.

Look arounf the £150-200 mark for a tripod capable of holding steady an SLR with a biggish lens

i would like one that i can fit lenses to so that when i feel the need to i can, and a decent tripod for stop motion

Bear in mind that a good lens will often cost upwards of £300 (depending on quality and type), which in your case will be more than the camera itself :)
