Hi guys,

I will soon be getting an old PC from work:

  • Intel Core i5-2500 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155
  • GeIL EVO Leggera 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz
  • OcUK 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM
  • Gigabyte H61M-S2 Intel H61 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard
  • OCZ ZS Series 550W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply
  • Cooler Master Elite 334 Midi Case - Black
  • Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 32MB Cache OEM
  • Kingston SSDNow V-Series 128GB 2.5" SATA-II SSD

Decent enough spec, but as it's been used as an office PC, no graphics other than the onboard.

Since it's a couple of years old, I'm guessing there's no point in spending £300 on a card which will just be limited by the rest of the system (and I don't really want to spend that much anyway!).

So, what would be a good match for the rest of the hardware? Cost wise, I'd prefer to keep it <£100, but £150 absolute maximum.

I'm open to suggestions of 2nd hand cards too :)

Cheers!

Will you be gaming and if so at what resolution ?

That's the idea :)

Max res will be 1920x1080, either HDMI to my TV or on a 24" monitor.

I haven't had a decent gaming system in about 6 years (last one I built was a Athlon64 x2 4600 with Radeon x1900xtx :p) so no idea what's good currently.

Go for a 270x. It's on par with a GTX 760 and a bit cheaper too, not to mention the freebies. You can play all the modern titles at 1080p with this, although don't expect to be able to put every detail on "ultra" or "very high".

If you don't want to spend that much, you can get a GTX 750 TI or a Radeon 265. I think there are some discounts for these cards at the moment, and both will do just fine in gaming.

Sounds like a 270x is it then :)

Not fussed about maxing all the settings, I'm currently gaming on a PS3 or my laptop with a core2duo t6600 and Radeon Mobility HD4570, so anything is going to be a huge improvement :D
