Hey, ok.. first thing, please don't turn this into an argument of nvidea / ATI. I have absolutely no loyalty to either brand, previously I have always had ATI cards, but... that's by chance more than anything else.

I have approx 300 GBP that i'm looking to buy a new card with. I was thinking I was doing the sensible thing waiting for the 6900s to come out. They've come out, i've looked at benchmarks i'm that's made me a bit more confused ( they all seem to vary a bit, and i'm not sure whats best to go to for ).

Also, the Nvidea cards, i'm not familiar with the makes, but I decided if I was to get a 6900 i'd go with HIS.

I would appreciate people to read my requirements, and would really love it if someone can find the best card for me:
- Can run all latest games.
- Low noise, and preferably low heat, I really don't like my PC noisy and my current card is.
- Good with everyday windows applications as well as games.
- If possible, can be eventually crossfired / SLI'd using my Corsair TX650w

Reason for upgrading: I have a ATI HD 4870 1gb. It's good, but noisy and i'm sure may struggle with some games nowadays. When in Windows 7, if I work as QA so often have a VM open, and about 15-20 windows, lots of different browsers, and sometimes screen share ( skype ). I have seen recently often getting the message saying my system is running slow and I should switch to windows 7 basic theme. Now, whilst not being hugely fussed about that, I see it as a sign, and I always want a new system to work with because I use it daily. Of course, I do play the occasional games, normally the latest games when I play them, and I do like a high resolution ( Dell 23" monitor )

I'm happy to let 300 pounds go to get this fixed, and to make it futureproof and a good experience.

An option: I could crossfire / SLI with a lower speed card, but I'm worried about temps, if my PSU will work with it, price and how well cards scale. My housemate already says he will buy my 4870, so I can't just buy another one of them ( And wouldn't want to ).

I am looking at the 6950 / 6970 / GTX 470, but I know nothing of the makes with nvidia, and which are reliable / best.

Please advise me! I much appreciate your help!!

Check out the thread about MSI 5850's.
Two for crossfire for £250!!
5970 performance(fastest card).

Or 2x6850's for around £300, they do scale really well.

Oh, and I have 2x5850's and have not noticed any increase in temps. My PSU is only 620w and copes just fine.

Ok, cool. Thanks Cleecooo, so now I really need to just decide which is best, a single 6970/6950, or two 6850 / 6870s

I'm really not sure myself, I'm sure I saw like a comparison site where I could enter cards and get charts, but I can't find that now :S. Does anyone know it?

6970 :)

meets your requirements and offers the prospect of adding a second some way down the line

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/GPU/88 might be what you're thinking of? However it hasn't yet been updated with the gtx5xx and radeon 6xxx cards.

I would consider the future when purchasing. If you buy a 6950/70, you have the option to crossfire them at a later date for very high performance.

As far as nvidia cards go, the gtx470 is slower than the Radeon 6950, and the gtx570 is pretty much on par with the 6970, having a very minor lead in a few tests. However, the 570 is also cheaper than the 6970 currently, at £270

Also, while the Nvidia cards do use a slight bit more power, here is an extract from a 570 sli review.

Measured power consumption

System in IDLE = 218W
System Wattage with GPU in FULL Stress = 578W
Difference (GPU load) = 360W
Add average IDLE wattage ~ 50W
Subjective obtained GPU power consumption = ~ 410 Watts

The 5850 is a faster card than the 6850. But according to this review...

http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon-hd-6850-6870-crossfirex-review/1

(Guru3d are good) and others that atlhough the 5850's will out perform the 6850's in crossfire in a few games due to better scalling the 6850's do better in crossfire in most games. I say this as although the 5850's are on a good good deal, two 6850's are going to be cooler, quieter and consume less power, and with this deal...

If I were in your boat I would go with two of those!

Oh and if you do end up taking my advice, the extra copy of CODMW2 will be greatly appreciated! :D
