I'm only a casual gamer, but I want to update my monitor so therefore I need to get a card with a displayport.

My PC is quite old and has a 775 socket mobo (Asus P5Q SE/R) / quad core CPU.

Currently I have a GeForce GTX 560ti which is perfectly fine mostly, as I play older games, and a couple of racing sims so it's quite adequate.

Will newer cards even work on my old system? Budget is cheap as I can go (will prob look second hand) but obviously don't want to go backwards in performance. Nvidia preferred.

probably quite a few cheap 2nd hand GTX 970's around.
check your power supply, wattage and quality (80+ ??)
measure how much space you have in your case for a new card
etc.

775 was still PCI-E, so should be fine there. You're probably limited to 8x, but that's not going to be your bottleneck really.

I'd suggest something lightweight like a 1050, since you'll get the latest API support, with a low power envelope and smaller size. Performance should be quite a lot better, despite this being the budget card for this year.

Alternatively - there are DVI-displayport adapters available. You'll need an 'active' one, I think. Will cost less than the GPU :)

I wouldn't go as high as a GTX970, maybe look to get a 2nd hand GTX 670/GTX 760. The GTX 960 you could also consider but 2nd prices are around £80ish whereas a GTX670 is going to around £50 and will offer around the performance.

Also as per your preference stick with Nvidia and avoid AMD, their CPU overhead is terrible and cripples low end hardware like yours.

All good suggestions thankyou. PSU is no problem it's a decent 650w (OCZ). Case is also ok size wise.

I was mostly concerned that the mobo / chipset may actually be too old to run a current (ish) gen gfx card, but I'll be ok it seems with 960 etc? I think I'll look to that level, maybe 760 if I get it nice and cheap.
