Hey guys, always ran ati readon cards in my pc's. in my last upgrade i got myself a 1950.

upped the ram since then to 4 gig and now looking at upping the graphics cards.

Two which stand out are the 3870 or an 8800 gt. looking to spend around 150 give or take 20 quid, just been a bit out of the loop on graphics cards and was just looking for some advice.

The 8800GT will outdo a 3870 pretty effortlessly, but as said above you could afford a 512MB GTS.

It's also worth noting the 512MB GTS is probably as good as the new 9800GTX coming out.

I agree on two fronts. The 8800GT is better but you'd be better with the 8800GTS 512mb as it's practically a 9800GTX without a fancy dress on :).

but dependign on his res the GT and GTS are very even. its only when you go for bigger res are there more than 3-4 fps difference.
But the GTS has quieter, dual-slot cooling and will perform a bit better in future titles. You should always get the best graphics card you can afford at the time really, you'll thank yourself later.

I should probably mention that Jontain runs on a 1280x1024 native screen.

If I might assume something, the 512 GTS is the newer breed of GTS?

Heheh, awesome. Did it go down a few nm in fabrication, or am I thinking of something else?

edit: sorry for going off topic, by the way.

sounds good, sorry to ask but as i say ive been a bit of an ati fan boy in the sense i always stuck with them,

thanks for the info, looks like the gts sounds like something i should get a look at.

Thanks guys

If you play Call of Duty 1 then the 8800 series has a problem running it. Lag and jerking issues, having to disable one core, knock back on a few settings. Pretty pathetic really when I used to urinate all over this game with my 9800Pro years ago :D.

Reason I mention it as I get the problem as do friends with 8800 GT's and 8600GTS's. So the 9 series will be affected also as there is no difference in the cards. Luckily I still have my 2900Pro here but it's going to be a bit much installing a card for a few hours play then back to the GTX for everything else :(.

If you don't play that game then it will be perfect :D.

Is the GTS faster than an overclocked 8800GT? OC are selling an 8800GT overclocked which is apparently very fast but also very hot. If the GTS is faster but cooler that would be worth the extra money.
