Spec me a card

Out of the box the 5850 would be faster than a GTX460 1GB, and as people say, GTX460 can easily overclock to reach same speed as 5850, and the 5850 itself 'could' overclock to 5870 speed.

The 5850 would cost £200, while the GTX460 with decent VGA cooler (i.e. Gigabyte, MSI brand Cyclone version) only cost £180 or less if you look around. There's not mistake that the 5850 is a little faster card, but feature wise Nvidia offer more of you use them (such as CUDE, Physx, 3D and SLI-which the dual-GTX460 set up can easily match crossfired 5850, if not faster when both the GTX460 and 5850 are overclocked). Single card wise both card won't have much problem, but for Crossfire vs SLI, the game profiles update for Crossfire update is slow and you might have to wait quite a while after you bought a new game before Crossfire will work fully on it.

So at the end of the day, it's really down to your personal preference and we can't decide for you what you want. If you are sure won't need the extra features Nvidia offers and won't be going dual-cards in the future, then the 5850 might be a better choice, however if you are thinking of going dual-card in the future and want the extra features, then the GTX460 would be a better choice.

It all depends upon your budget and if you intend to go duel cards. Single card 5850 but duel card 460 (as long as your motherboard supports it).

CUDA and fizzx are just extras that most people dont care or use anyway.

You could consider a 5830, then overclock that to 5850 clocks (i think its possible) that would be a fair bit cheaper as OCuk have some cracking deals on at the moment, but if thats out of the question i would go with the 460 but that is my personal opinion.
As others have said its down to what you want, performance or features?

Actually that's a bad suggestion, as the 5830 only got half the ROPs of 5850/5870, so overclock would still struggle to compare to 5850. With that said, the 5830 is an ok card at £140, but performance wise it simply ain't up there with GTX460 and 5850.
