Spec me a CCTV System

I’ve got two cameras screwed into a plastic soffit and they’re not going anywhere. Soffits are more than thick enough to let you screw the camera in place
Ditto. Been in place over 4 years (including a heavier PTZ cam), through all sorts of weather, without an issue.

Just make certain the POE connection is weather-tight, as I had a camera get moisture in the front lens due to a faulty o-ring (Reolink replaced it without a fuss).

The Ubiquiti cameras come with a cable gland thing. Which will be tucked up into the soffit, if water is dripping onto it up there I have other issues. :)

Not sure if this is the best forum for this.

My mother in law has been abused in the nursing home she is currently in. The nursing home have actually been very good in dealing with this. I don't want to go into a rabbit hole on that though.

They have agreed to let us stick a camera in her room. We want something which can just plug in and connect to their wifi network. It also needs to be something we can watch remotely and have it store video footage to the cloud. We also want to be able to check in on her at any time as well.

What should I be looking for?

Not going too much off topic, but that's a police matter. I hope you're reported it.

Been thinking of getting a CCTV system for awhile. What do people suggest ?

Ideally would like it to obviously be good recording day/night.
But does a wireless continuous recording system really work well, ideally with an app to view on phone whilst away on holiday etc.
Not looking for a massive system, just front and back of the house. So maybe 2 on front to cover both sides of our cars and 1 or 2 for back of house.

Reolink gets recommended a lot here. Reolink does have some cameras with very good colour night vision.

If you want reliability, then wired cameras using Power over Ethernet are better. The wireless systems do work, but then you have batteries that may run out, although you can get solar powered cameras.

Reolink has an app.

Other brands you could look at: Arlo, Eufy, UniFi

There's also Dahua and Hikvision, but these are Chinese owned, and maybe some concerns over data security, although I've not looked into it in detail.

I'll have a look at some Reolink systems.

Also looking at the Reolink systems. I have an aging 1080p POE setup that I'm looking to replace and seems Reolink offer a good range of 4k (5mp) and 4K+ (12mp) bundles.

Anyone here have experience between any of their 4k and 4k+ systems, is the latter worth the additional cost? Thanks.

Worth it for what reason? 4k means really nice and high clarity images, but it also means more storage. It might be worth it if you want to read number plates for instance, or watch birds visiting your garden on your cameras.

I meant between 5mp and 12mp in terms of picture quality. It's all well and good quoting 12mp but if the compression is crap it could be worse than a standard 4K image.

The optics are just as important as the megapixel count, sensor size or resolution.

You can have a 4K camera but if it has a super wide angle lens on the front of it and a small sensor, you aren’t going to head number places from a material distance away, particularly if light levels are lower.

Equally in my recent experience of upgrading my old 2MP Samsung Techwin (Now Hanwha) cameras, when I looked at consumer brands like Reolink and particularly Annke, the FoV on most of their cameras was no where near as wide as "trade" brands, meaning it would have limited my coverage.

As a result I ended up picking up some lightly used Dahua's from Ebay - which have been basically a like for like replacement, but with more resolution and newer codec support etc.

Yeah I was feeling similar, rather than ordering a bundle set I ended up ordering the RLN8-410 as the NVR, a Duo 3 and a couple of the RLC-1224A 4K+ cameras. Turned up this evening so will trying and have a play with them tomorrow.
any joy with your purchase?

still undecided, like the idea of the home hub pro and having cameras and door bell. But i can't find any of the cameras to continuous record.

Have been looking at either RLK12-800WB4 or RLK8-843V4

Yeah I had a little play with the kids today and so far I've been impressed.

What did surprise me though is one of the reasons I wanted a new system was not only did I have some hardware issues with the old Swann setup, but the software was dreadful; really clunky plus they no longer have a compatible MacOS client. Well I found out today that the Reolink software is totally compatible with the old Swann system, both the IOS and MacOS clients.

I still needed to replace the old system but if I had known about the software compatibility that would have helped a lot over the past couple of years.

Setup of the Reolink stuff was super simple and the 180 Duo camera is pretty cool.

I'm also thinking of replacing my Ring Doorbell with a Reolink one so everything is all in the one system and I can also drop the Ring subscription.

That's good to know, nice to have feedback.
