i'm looking to spend under/around £200 for a reliable 24 port gigabit switch, must be 1U rackmountable and for the price, i doubt think i'll be able get anything managed.

the dell powerconnect 2724 maybe looks like it could fit the bill rather well but i also like the look (or should that be sound) or the hp procurve 1800-24, as its fanless but lack of noise is not totally essential.

any suggestions for/against the above 2 mentioned switches, or anything else that fits the budget? i am leaning towards the dell more atm.

Never really had much experience with Dell's kit but i could recommend the Procurve though. We use managed procurves (2600's) switches but i can imagine that the 1800 will still be rock solid.

Another alternative would be a Allied Telesyn AT-GS900.

I've got the 2716 Dell powerconnect - it's been rock solid for me and works great for my home environment (only costing £70).

Supports jumbo frames and has a web managed interface (although the drawback being that configurations cannot be saved so in the case of failure, you have to reconfigure the lot - which is fine if you write it all down or something). Can be web managed or simply act as a dumb switch.

couldnt really find much info about the allied switches, are they reliable etc?

i did read that the powerconnect's couldnt save the configs but i didnt see that as a problem as i was going to use it a unmanaged switch anyway.

Can't think of anything quite that cheap - but I know those 1400/1800 from HP are near that sort of cost.

Personally, I wouldn't buy anything except HP in the business environment until I could afford Cisco kit and even then, depending on your needs the HP's are often better value.

I've seen folks using a lot of Netgear business switches out there and while reliable, don't even approach wire-speed.

For under £200 you can forget any managed solution, i assume your only after a layer 2 device also.

Personally i wouldn't go with Procurve, im a big fan of HP's server/storage line but when it comes too switching Cisco is the only viable choice, failing that Linksys.

The SR2024C comes in arround the £170 mark.

if your looking for a 'cheap' switch with lots of ports, why not buy a second hand cisco switch of the bay? MUCH cheaper then a brand new switch, and i assume lots of them are managable too.

Dell all the time, we use them in our infrustructure (over 1000 users) we have a few older switches (3com) which regulaly die, these are being replaced with the dell powerconnect switches which are reliable from the word go.

Netgear do a cheap unmanaged 24 port switch. It was around the £200 mark too.

jgs524uk is the model number

At work we have a couple of cheapo Netgear GSM7224's which have been great. The Dell PowerConnects are rebadged Netgears (at least all the ones I've seen).

i did look at the jgs524, but thats a unmanaged switch, and the dell 2724 comes in around £185 and its managed (well, web managed).

just wondered if there was any reason i should get a £200ish (netgear/hp etc) unmanaged switch over a cheaper (web)managed dell 2724.

i wouldnt be able to afford a cisco and want to get a new one ideally.

Just make sure you update the firmware on these, otherwise they like to crash will your configuring them.

Another vote for HP here too although as others (and yourself) have commented, you won't be able to get a proper managed gigabit switch for that sort of money!
