I've got a little one on the way, and I have a 10 Y/O step son

I'm currently driving an 03' celica T-sport which I adore, without a doubt the best £1,100 i've ever spent its been fantastic. Its not cost me a penny in ~2 years, its quick(ish) and its a pleasure to drive

I just don't think its going to work though :( It will be a struggle to find a car seat that fits, and I'm not sure how much room will be left for the 10 Y/O even if I find one that will, not the mention the mechanics of actually getting a baby in the back of a low sprung 3 dr "sports" car will no doubt cripple me, so reluctantly, I think I will have to consider moving on.

I do a ~20 - 25 mile each way commute, mostly motorway, 5 days a week to work. I somehow only average about 10k miles a year (mrs drives too)

The celica, whilst fantastic, is kinda getting on my nerves on the motorway, as its loud as hell whilst cruising at high speed, and you need to drop down to 4th / 3rd to find the overtaking power, so most of the time I dont bother and have no overtaking power.

I dont really care about MPG TBH, I would much rather take reliability over MPG with the miles I do

I could maybe stretch to 4k as a budget, though 2.5k - 3k would be better, as the mrs is going to be off work for a while so I would prefer to have a larger buffer, + it would leave me with money for any unforeseen repairs

My current thoughts

Octavia VRS 2.0l TFSI

Pretty standard option given the criteria

Volvo s40 T5 / D5

I like this option, though I'm not convinced about the reliability?

Volvo s60 T5

Hard to come by, and really big! I'm a bit scared of driving a car that big, but I guess I will get used to it. Straight line performance looks incredible which should more than make up for the sub-par corning. They look a bit crap, but should be bomb proof, and they seam fantastic value for money.

Anything else I've missed?

IB4 get a 1.6D picaso

A T5 may end up being costly, not what you want in your circumstances.

Hmm. That could be an option. Its a bit big and a bit slow, but I think I could work with it. I like the idea of going Jap again

Mondeo ST220?

I've not really had a good look, but again, damn big. I'll have a proper look as I know they are seen as being a bit of a drivers car considering the family orientation

Oh, is there some kind of issue with the T5 engine?

If you like the Celica, why not a Corolla T-Sport?

I think parts of what I like about the celica will be lost on the corolla (the feeling of being behind a sports car at the wheel and the handling) and some of the parts I dont like will carry on (no overtaking power on motorway and the noise), though keeping lift at 6.2k RPM would be nice for sure.

Probably more towards the top end of your budget, but:

- BMW 520d / 525d / 530d
- Audi A4 2.0TFSI / 3.0TDI
- Seat Leon Cupra R
- Golf GTI

There are a few more out there, e.g. the equivalent 3 series beemers, 1 series beemers, Audi A3's etc. etc.
