Hey guys,

I am at university, so i guess i should have said university server ;)

Right any way, i have been looking through some threads, and call me geeky, but i would like a go at having a home server (uni), although i have no need for one.

This is reliant on how cheap i can get a computer that it suitable though. I think from what i read a little while ago, it doesnt need to be a great PC at all, 1gb ram, 2 core cpu, maybe even 1 core?

What OS should i use, i think i might be able to get a free copy of windows server through uni, but i have read about a few linux distros too.

I am probably looking at about 150 max(obviously making this near impossible?), i have a OLD PC at home which i might check out at christmas and see what i can salvage from it, although it has no ram in it for some reason haha.

Thanks...

EDIT: Just to add, at university i am not aloud to plug a router into the network, i dont it last year and it was fine, but this year it banned my connection almost instantly. I think servers are usually plugged into a router so i am not sure i could even use a server here? Unless i plug the network into the server, then using another rj45 port connection the server to a router(mines actually a switch), and then bridge the internet connection meaning i could access the files on the server and the internet?

rofl oh dear.

I will see what condition the computer is in at my house. I have just looked at some NAS and they look decent, i would have it in raid with 2 HDD one mirroring the other. Think i may get one of them!

Would be useful at home aswell as my xbox and ps3 would be able to access a NAS right?
