Hi guys another spec me a new pc thread...

I have just had a call from my dads girlfriend she as asked me to have a look at her PC, she says the kids only really use it for going on the net, I asked how old it was and she said she wasnt sure but she had it upgraded about two years ago, it as Windows 98 on it and she said when she turns it on it just crashes and then takes about 30mins to boot back up.

I asked if she would be willing to spend some money on a new one and she said she had looked around but couldnt really afford the pc`s in the shop because they was around £400, so she doesnt want to spend anywhere near this on a new one, have you guys got any suggestions.

I am going to be having a look at it sometime in the week.

I think this is getting close to as cheaply as you can do it new, you use onboard sound and graphics, it is a Celeron D and only has 512mb Ram so is hardly going to be a flying machine but I guess it depends what they are used to. It should offer a base for some upgrades though. :)

Intel Celeron D 326 2.53GHz (LGA775) - Retail £27.99
(£32.89) £27.99
(£32.89)
Antec NSK4400 Mini Tower Case - 380W SmartPower PSU £42.99

Samsung SpinPoint P HD080HJ 80GB SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM £25.99
(£30.54) £25.99
(£30.54)
Liteon DVD-8900 16x DVD±RW/RAM (Black) - OEM £14.99
(£17.61) £14.99

Abit IP-95 Micro ATX (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £31.99

I'll get utterly slated for this but what about a pre built from Dell?

£298 gets you:

AMD Sempron Processor 3400+
English Genuine Windows Vista™ Home Basic
Collect & Return, 1 Year Service only
Dell™ 15" Value Flat Panel (E156FP)
512MB DDR2 533MHz Memory
160GB (7200rpm) Serial ATA Hard Drive with 8MB DataBurst™ cache
48X CDRW/DVD-ROM combination Drive
Integrated nVidia® GeForce® 6150 LE graphics
Dell Black Entry Quietkey USB Keyboard
Dell 2 Button USB Scroll Optical Mouse - Black
No Floppy Drive
No Modem
Integrated 7.1 Channel High Definition Audio
No Speakers

Case looks really compact and style wise everything looks smart. You also get a 15" TFT and Vista OS.

Ok just picked it up its a PackardBell Club ?

That model name covers a multitude of sins, a model number would be helpful or better yet a listing of the main components that you've got from the PackardBell website. That is assuming you can't just boot it and find out from the Windows Hardware Manager. You may find that a good spyware cleaner and possibly a physical clean will render the PC usable again. :)

You can't beat dell on the low end tbh

I'll second that. Especially as the Dell will come with support and whatnot, saving you hassle. If you build them one and it goes **** up, it's up to you to sort it. With a Dell they get a decent little machine and all the associated support and whatnot.

I am currently considering building a new CD2 for myself.

My current system is

  • P4C800 -E Deluxe
  • 1.5gb Ram
  • 100gb HDD
  • Radeon 9700 Pro
  • P4 3.2

How much do you think I should offer this to them for ?
