As title really - daily grind to work and back ~ 40 miles a day.

Having just had my pride and joy landrover written off by a dozy woman driver on tuesday lunchtime, I am looking for replacement vehicle ideas in advance of the likelihood of a thieving offer from my insurance company - I've already had the old 'well... because it's an older vehicle....' hesitation on the phone.

So - it needs to be cheap to buy, cheap to run and cheap to tax and cheap to maintain.

I really couldn't care less what it might be (so long as it's not a reliant or something rubbish like that) and if it lasts me 12 months of cheap motoring I'll be satisfied.

Budget?

Most definitely less than 1K.

At this point I'm after ideas of what's out there. The shenanigans with liability and vehicle value etc etc have not begun in earnest yet, so I'm not anticipating any kind of decent payout* without a fight.

So the funds proposed are my own savings.

* I've never been paid what the vehicle is worth, even with garage backing for value, from any insurance company. If it ain't new and expensive, you get shafted.

Focus or Mondeo, if you want some sort of creature comforts.

106 1.5 diesel if you don't give a hoot and want cheaper than cheap to run.

hmmm. cheapest micras are pushing 1700 quid! on autotrader - any mileage/any age.

You fail at searching! :p.
There are loads of Micras on there for under £1000!!!!!
Afaik most Micras pre-1999 have no immobiliser built into the key, as I think this is when it became mandatory. They are known (so the traffic cops programme said) to be the new 'Nova' with regards to joyriding theft as they can be hotwired.

ooh, what got removed? lol

Will be looking for some 106 examples in the coming weeks perhaps, micras too (there's a shed load near me for sod all cash... eek).
All depends on the insurance outcome as to what is decided for certain in the next couple of weeks.
But thanks for some suggestions to go look at.

I said "Veyron" - obviously removed as it was such a helpful suggestion...

In all seriousness, what about looking at something Korean/bottom of the range but with some remaining warranty (eg Kia - 7 year warranty I think)?

Are those warranties transferable? Worth checking

I'd vote for Pug 106, most a dogs nowadays but they are simple machines and not bad to chuck about

Was in exactly the same sitation last year, considered a focus, astra and fiesta.

In the end i settled on a 2000 nissan almera.

Picked up a top of the range model for 450 quid with 80k on the clock and its only required a new battery in its first year. Starts first time every time and is far more reliable than both my previous french cars!

if you liked your land rover im sure you can get a battered up disco or freelander for around 1k, although neither would be top of my list :P

have a look on retro rides maybe? loads of cheap bangers on there.

i would be tempted with something like an e34 or a gen6 celica.
