Hi guys,

my wife's PC has started grinding to a halt since I put Vista Ultimate on. Going back to XP is not an option, so don't there. ;)

PC spec:

Athlon XP 2GHz, I think it's an XP 2600
2Gb DDR ram
GeForce4 MX440 AGP 8x card

Windows Vista Experience scores:

Processor 3.4
RAM 3.5
Graphics 1.9
Gaming graphics 1.0
Primary Hard Disk 5.3

The PC is used purely for Microsoft Office applications, some very basic picture editing in PSP, general web browsing etc. No gaming - that's what my rig is for ;) Nothing too taxing.

The trouble is that it takes an age to load up, and she hasn't got too many apps on startup. It also crawls when opening phots into Powerpoint and trying to resize and move around the screen.

All things point to the graphics card, although I'm sure it's chugging on calculation based applications too. However, do I spend £30-£40 on a new one and hope that it sorts it out, or should I bite the bullet and upgrade the whole thing - CPU, motherboard with onboard graphics & sound and RAM? I know that I can get something like:

Abit A-N78HD
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4600+ 2.40GHz (Socket AM2)
2Gb DDR2

for around £130. £90 more than a new AGP card, but I'm sure her system would fly.

Thoughts?

Cheers,
Jed.

EDIT - just been told of another slowdown issue. Sometimes when she starts typing it seems to freeze for a while and then the letters catch up on the screen. Surely this can't be just a graphics card issue?

Also bear in mind that this needs to be resolved quickly as my wife is going nuts and that obviously means that I'm feeling the pain too :)

That should bascially be fine, this would be a suitable Intel option, might be a bit more overclockable but that isn't probably a huge issue for you.

Another AMD solution would be the 780G based motherboard with an X2 processor, maybe 45w if you like less power consumption. Add any two GBs of RAM and the system should be good to go.

Sounds like the processor is holding you/her back. Vista really needs a Dual-Core chip to shine* ;)

Therefore, getting a new GFX won't solve the issues. Best go the full hog & upgrade since can't go back to XP.

Is £130 your maximum budget?

*DDR2 RAM & newer chipset mobos also play their part.

Right then .. I need to dust off the credit card :)

I like the idea of the 45w AMD cpu's, it's a route I'll be looking to take for my next build - a HTPC for my living room.

Give me some ideas for a 45w CPU my wife's upgrade ...

I can see some problems with the motherboard though - she's got 2x 160Gb IDE drives and an IDE DVD rewriter. I know that a lot of the newer boards have a limited number of IDE slots. Are there IDE to SATA cable converters available?

Yes you can get IDE-SATA adapters, the Abit Serielle is one but I'd suggest simply buying a cheap IDE controller card, shouldn't cost much more than £10-15 but probably more reliable and gives more options.

I'm having trouble finding the energy efficient AMD cpus on the overclocker site. Can someone point me in the right direction ...?

You looking for the 4x50e series which are not (yet) available in OcUK shop. Stocked elsewhere but unfortunately would break the rules if I say :(

Couldnt see a ide controller card so added in a 160 sata drive that way you could just replace one of the ide one's

Some of the AMD chips on this site claim to be "energy efficient" in the description. How do these compare to the 4x50e series, or the 4600+ mentioned above?

20 watts of extra power is not a lot, a standard light bulb uses more
the normal 65w CPU's really only use that when at full load.
the benefit of the lower watt CPU's only really comes in to play when you overclock heavily and regularly have your PC running at full load.
with what your wife uses the PC for to be honest you wont really see the difference

Don't forget that, 45w means they are also much cooler + good HSF = can be run/cooled completely silent :)

Another way round this is pick up a cheap SATA DVD±Writer instead ;)
