I have one of the thermal/water proof M&S coat which is actually too warm. It’s a tad bulky though.
My TM Lewin wool long jacket is still my go to. Was about £200 I think at the time. Smart, not bulky, warm.

For a grand it should clean your teeth and wipe your arse for you as well as keeping you warm.
There's no justification for that kind of price. It's no better than a dozen different brand coats you could get from Go Outdoors for less than £200.
I got a Craghoppers one from there a year or so ago. Actually got it for about £60 coz it was an end of line - so I can't recommend the actual one. Fastastically warm - to the extent that if I'm walking in it I find myself unzipping it to cool down, even in sub-zero temperatures.
