I have a flightstick which I bought for my wife to use for FSX. I was thinking of using it for some combat flying as well.

The last time I played a flight sim was F-117A from Microprose which I loved. Is there anything similar available now?

My prefferred is IL2 1946, old game though but personally I forget about the graphics when I'm flying it. There's a huge amount of content in the 1946 version which will keep you busy for a long time. Also get hyperlobby to play online.

For a modern sim like you fondly remember, lock on flaming cliffs 2 would be my pick, not a hardcore sim at all but enough complexity to satisfy most.

There are more specialist sims out there but I think these are the main entry points.

Falcon 4 BMS or DCS: A-10C / Black Shark. All are very steep learning curves due to the level of realism. F4 BMS is my long time favourite due to its dynamic campaign engine.

Rise of flight is a good flight sim with nice graphic, but it's a WW1 flight sim and can be played for free or you can buy the Iron cross edition. Also the learning curve can be quite hard, but you can adjust the game settings to make it a little easier. If you do want to add more planes it can be expensive, so I only buy new planes when they are on sale.

Another flight sim I enjoyed was Wings of prey (WW2), not so hardcore as other flight sims. But the realism settings can be changed from sim to arcade, so you can adjust the game settings to suit you.
