***BUMP*** time to progress this as will be looking to move in the next six months.
Original post criteria below are broadly intact with the exception of the following:
-No longer need links to Southampton as my wife will be changing jobs to work in Basingstoke area instead
-Headline budget increased to £550k to offset some inflation, but remains flexible
-Would like reasonable road links to Fareham area, but not that critical

I've subsequently visited various places considered including Fleet, Hook, Basingstoke, Farnborough, Farnham and Godalming to have a bit of a poke around and see what the towns area like. Currently I am drawn towards Fleet because of its peerless reputation (voted best place to live in UK past 5 years in a row) and decent range of family houses near the station; however, my head says that Basingstoke is a more practical option due to the better rail links (more frequent/direct trains to London/Reading/Southampton/Salisbury/Portsmouth), being slightly closer to family around Salisbury and also being a bit cheaper.

Having done my online research over a 2 year period (must have viewed over a thousand properties on Rightmove) the market has definitely moved on a bit, with prices around 15% higher I would guess compared to when I started looking

*** Original post below ***

Bit of a weird thread but here goes.
tl;dr version: Need family home in central southern England <1hr to London without breaking the bank

Proper version:
I am at a stage in my career where I may need to consider taking a job in the city to make decent strides forward and thus am loosely toying with the idea of moving to a commuter town sometime in the next couple of years (depending on what happens work wise). When I say commuter 'town' realistically this will likely translate as specific areas rather than whole towns, due to the below criteria

Things I want:
+Must be walking distance from a mainline railway station (<1hr to Central London). This is the #1 criteria and is the starting point for the search - I don't care if I could get a 6 bed mansion 15min drive from the station for less money, I still wouldn't live there.
+Good road links to Southampton (probably translates as quick access to the M3/A31/A34)
+Ideally reasonable transport links to Salisbury although not as important as the above
+Reasonably priced housing; under £500k for a 4 (or large 3) bed house)
+Catchment area for good primary school
+Safe / fairly quiet area (not expecting rural due to proximity to station, but e.g. surburban cul-de-sacs and the like or at least some nice streets)
+Ideally walking distance to a shopping district

Things I am not bothered about (i.e. criteria others might typically have but I am happy to compromise on):
-Style of housing / (so new build estates just as welcome as traditional streets of character properties)
-Nightlife / 'things to do' (I currently live in a sleepy town and it suits us fine)
-Outside space; not massively bothered about cramped estates with small gardens etc if it is a good safe community

So far the best I can come up with is Basingstoke which is about 45mins from all the towns I mentioned above and seems to run at around £350-400k for a reasonable 4bed semi. Not knowing the town outside of the leisure park however I do have concerns about whether it is actually that good a place to live / could be a bit 'chavvy' near the station / centre?

I also considered Winchester which has a better reputation but have provisionally discounted it on the basis that it is right on the limits of both travel time and potential budget (i.e. more expensive and further from London).

Farnborough looks an interesting prospect - 4 trains an hour to London ~40mins, house prices not too bad, big town centre redevelopment project, reasonable local jobs market etc.

Woking/Guildford maybe...?

^^East Grinstead is probably a bit too far East for me - poor road links to Southampton.
Looking at a county boundaries map I would say my search area is broadly Hampshire, Surrey and Berkshire, possibly with a few exceptions.

^Thanks, I had suspected that might be the case. I think I am going to do more research into Farnborough.

Thanks for the suggestions:

Fleet - been looking at this as an alternative to Farnborough. Seems to have a better rep?
Farnham - seems quite pricey but not necessarily out of reach, is it worth the premium?
Bentley - seems too expensive and very limited housing on the market
Hook - could be another option, I've seen a few jobs advertised here also which is always a nice safety net to have
Brighton - we like the town but just a bit too far afield
Haywards Heath / Crowborough - too far East
Didcot - Probably too far North although seems well connected. Maybe an outside bet.
Haslemere - too expensive

I hate to suggest it, but... Have you looked around Reading itself?
Not neccesarily central Reading (and avoid both Whitley and Tilehurst at all costs), but the outlying areas like Caversham, Earley, Woodley, Grazeley, Burghfield, Pangbourne, Theale, Spencers Wood, Beech Hill and Three Mile Cross tick most of those boxes.
Pangbourne, Theale, Earley, Winnersh and Twyford have stations, as do Wargrave, Aldermarston and Woolhampton.

Not really due to concerns about the area - also looking at at a few of those satellite stations they seem to typically involve either slow trains or a change (been burnt by missed connections many times in the past so keen to avoid!). Thanks for the suggestion though.

Anyway I've been giving the overall premise some more thought/research over the past couple of months and have come to the conclusion that after accounting for season ticket cost (equivalent to ~£5-10k net salary) and differences in house prices (£100k+ compared to locally), the numbers don't stack up too well. London doesn't seem to carry a high enough salary weighting on the sort of jobs I could land in the next couple of years. Or at the very least, I should only shoot for the moon rather than considering taking jobs with a rise of say less than £25k.

Fleet is probably my #1 pick based on research so far.

Left-field consideration is getting a pied-a-terre on the basis that it could be an investment as well - although I suspect I've missed the boat on that one.

Where in London will you be working. When you say city do you mean financial district around bank?

This is important, many of the suggestions here will get you to london in <1hr but certainly not to the city as it's east. You can expect a 40 min further commute from somewhere like paddington...

Yes, near Bank - I've now found a job hence the thread bump!

Still struggling to find much value - it seems £450k won't really get me anything bigger than what I have at the moment (~1340s***) in the areas I'd consider living. Logically I know that if there were any 'gem' areas the market would flatten them out due to plenty of others wanting the same, but still....

Coming round to the idea of Hook if it is definitely a better place for families than Fleet.

Rightly or wrongly I've always dismissed Slough on reputation, although I have at one point considered Langley due to impending Crossrailage (Liverpool St is under 10mins walk from my office so being able to get a direct train there in 36mins would be pretty awesome).

To be honest, I don't think we'll go for anywhere north of Reading, which is starting to enter my thinking if I can find somewhere safe (Caversham area maybe?)

Fuzzb3k, what were your experiences with Taylor Wimpey for that development? I actually phoned a couple of the developments earlier this week to get a feel for what stage the developments (Woodlands/Oaklands) were at in terms of projected completion dates etc for available plots. How much were you able to negotiate off the list price?

My gut feeling is probably I should look for something secondhand nearer the station, but I haven't totally discounted it.

Had another poke about in Fleet at the weekend. Have ruled out Church Crookham as it is just too far from the station and there was a slightly iffy looking estate of older properties (ex-council/military?) near one of the developments. Ancells Farm / Pondtail / Elvetham Heath seem more suitable to us I think.

Town centre still feels a bit meh and rundown (why are there empty shopping units if the town is so popular!) but not a deal-breaker if the key criteria are met. Just doesn't seem to many redeeming features really (dull slightly worn feel / architecture, not much independents, has neither historic small town charm like my hometown, nor modern slickness like where I live currently).
